This is a review looking solely at setting up your own dedicated server. If you're not interested in doing that, then the problems given here are not going to be relevant to you, so I wouldn't worry too much if you're just looking to play singleplayer. I can't properly comment on the gameplay anyway since I wasn't even able to get very far.

after hours of attempting to get a working server up I have given up. This is without a doubt the worst designed and buggiest server admin system for any game I have ever hosted, and has made the game literally unplayable.

-Server will occasionally reject login for incorrect password when there is no password set
-Server will not use correct ports (after properly forwarding ports and checking they're open with a third-party tool)
-cannot build anything on my own server - Blueprints disappear moments after placing them, making the game unplayable
- occasionally cannot see other players when on server
-Leaderboard occasionally showing incorrect playercount
-leaderboard occasionally not showing player names, instead showing '?'
-No server console or any sort to assist in bugtesting. Server has to be closed via taskmanager once running, and you are not able to check any server information or input any commands from the actual host running the server.

The way player character saving is handled is also awful. The autosave that the server does is strictly world-only edits and not character inventories, position etc. That would be fine, many games have a system like that, but the server does not save player information on exit, meaning lost progress and hellish bugtesting when starting up and rejoining the server multiple times to test, with you having to go through the intro sequence over and over again. There is no way to change this behaviour as it's more of a clientside issue

Also because the server has no console, it’s impossible to shutdown the server and be sure all the world data is saved, as you can’t force a save from the actual computer running the server. You have to just wait for autosave to kick in – And good luck knowing when that happens without having to literally watch the server files’ date modified timestamp and wait for it to change.

As I am totally unable to build or even see any other players when on my server, after hours of troubleshooting and a lot of experience in setting up game servers, I am completely unable to get past even the first objective of building a campfire due to the blueprint bug alone. Re-installing my local copy of the game and rebuilding the server from scratch multiple times, using the steamCMD and server tools version, has not fixed this problem. A total shame, I was really looking forward to playing this game with my friends, but dedicated server setup is so broken that I have given up and requested a refund

Captains log: Stardate 46154.2

It has been an interesting few weeks. Between the constant raids on my ship, Ion Storms and Solar flares, the crew now has the projected service lifetime of 3 days. If it wasn't for the clone machine I myself would have been gone a long time ago. On our journey back to the Federation base, I can't help but wonder if I've done this before... Sometimes when on the bridge I swear I have experienced the events unfolding before - An untrustworthy slug merchant, an infestation of alien spiders on a nearby station. Nevertheless, even with this uneasy feelings we press on towards the next sector, hoping that it won't be another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Mantis homeworld.
