This game is fine so I'll give it a solid 7/10 thumbs up decent open-world game. This game shows a lot of potential for a sequel to - oh wait Warner Bros is making the sequel a live service game like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Warner Bros is awful and I'm not going to review bomb a game I actually thought was decently fun, but holy moly awful company. Awful company run by awful people. Not only is it enough to start pumping live service garbage, they're also shuttering good studios that they acquired and owned.

RIP Duck Game and Adult Swim Games.

RIP Rooster Teeth.

RIP however many untold number of projects that got axed like the Wile E Coyote movie.

If I had a nickel every time I was obsessed with a 4-player co-op horde shooter made by Swedish people, I'd have four nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened uhhh... quadrice*, right?

Overall, this is a great game that scratches the eternal itch for a co-op game where you crack open a cold one with the boys and shoot endless waves of enemies.

I'm an expert** of this genre of games going way back to its original progenitor, Left 4 Dead***, which was also the first game I bought**** on Steam, so I know a good one when I see one.

This is a good one.

Gameplay

Every mission starts the same: you select where you drop from space onto an open-world map where you can beeline straight towards the main objectives or explore to destroy enemy bases, collect loot, and complete side objectives that may help your conquest or remove some strategic advantage of the enemy.

While I'm sure certain folks will hyper-optimize and converge strategies at higher-tier difficulties to "the meta" like other games, you can experiment with your loadouts and approaches to see what suits your playstyle and your team's strengths and capabilities.

Are you someone who likes to sneak in and drop airstrikes and blow things up behind enemy lines, avoiding direct confrontations? Do you prefer to face enemies head-on with big guns? Do you want to support your teammates by supplying ammo or quick buddy-reloads for their big guns?

Missions are timed and fast-paced: you will die repeatedly and respawn quickly, though take care since respawns are limited. There's very little downtime since you need to constantly push towards loot and the objectives, there's always some excitement going on.

Progression

This game has a progression system, since every game has a progression system nowadays instead of pre-2010 games. Thank Call of Duty for that.

Anyway, progression is pretty quick and easy, it may be a bit of a slog when some people insist on scouring every square inch of the map to extract every bit of loot.

Requisition Slips are used to buy strategems, which you earn by completing missions. Strategems are unlocked by leveling up 1-20, whichcan happen

Medals are got by completing missions and "campagins" which are sets of 2-3 missions. These are used to buy stuff under "Warbonds" which are basically battle passes where you pick-and-choose what you want to go up to the next tier. Guns, armor, emotes, and etc are primarily through these warbonds.

There is a rotating "Super Store" which takes Super Credits that can be bought with real money, found as random drops in the match, or selected in the warbonds mentioned above. This store only has armor/cosmetics, no weapons.

It's refreshing to see (and also sad that this needs to be said) that everything is attainable without spending money, including the cosmetic items and premium battle passes.

Purchasing extras with real money does not meaningfully shortcut progression, it mainly just feels good to support the developers. The only exclusive thing you can get is by buying the Super Citizen edition to get yourself a SUPER CITIZEN title and some armor that has equivalent and better armor earned through the regular warbonds and unlock access to the second battle pass (which you still need to level up through regular play).

Balance

At higher difficulties, balance becomes more of an issue with certain equipment and tactics becoming more expected of you than being a polite suggestion.

Having ways to deal with lots of large, armored enemies is strongly recommended. However, that's still fine! Like in other games, the top-tier difficulties give the best loot for the highest risk, but goofing around at mid-tiers still gets you plenty of loot while being plenty fun.

I would like to see more playstyles emerge with more strategems as they get buffed and balanced over time. The developers seem to be happy to use their unexpected success to maintain momentum and push the game forward.

Setting/Atmosphere

It's basically just Starship Troopers: lighthearted, comedic tone of a future Super Earth spreading democracy and freedom across the galaxy against the heartless automatons and savage terminids one orbital strike at a time. The best defense is a good offense!

Its tone really complements the fast-paced gameplay loop where you'll die repeatedly and spectacularly, converting "rage-inducing" moments in other games in the genre to funny highlight reels, such as when your throw to call in an air strike bounces off your friend's head and kills him, then his drop to respawn lands on your head and kills you.

Graphics

The game is pretty.

Conclusion

Overall, I give this a strong recommendation. It's a blast with your friends and with the random people you meet along the way. Teamwork is critical in your path to maintain freedom and managed democracy. If you enjoy co-op horde shooters, this is a good one to pick up, it's well worth the price of admission.

Left 4 Dead was worth $40 back in the day. Especially when you consider inflation, technological advancements, and overall competition in the genre, Helldivers 2 is certainly worth $40 today!

---

*Payday 2's Overkill, Vermintide and Darktide's Fatshark, and Helldivers 2's Arrowhead Games are all based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Originally, the joke was going to be "Scandinavian people" to be inclusive of Deep Rock Galactic's Ghost Ship Games, but honestly I didn't play DRG as much as I should have, since that was a busy time in my life with work and other games. Nonetheless, ROCK AND STONE!

Also, "quadrice" is a funnier made-up word as opposed to "quintice". All of these games are fantastic in their own regard and offer something a little different than this game, so by all means check them out separately, especially if you have friends and they're on sale!

---

**I have 1200 hours in Vermintide 2 and 1000 in Payday 2, with a combined total of probably around 3000 hours for co-op horde shooter games. This borders on being classifiable as a severe mental illness, which is likely to be the case in the near future with the release of the DSM-6.

---

***I am pretty sure Left 4 Dead made online co-op horde shooters popular, but I am too lazy to check. Left 4 Dead 2 is also still great after 15 years, but I'm likewise excluding it from the review title for the purpose of the original joke since Valve is not Swedish.

Feel free to counter with an earlier game than Left 4 Dead but I'll probably just reply with
"🤓"

I may edit the review and give credit if you prove me wrong and I won't delete the comments.

****I'm pretty sure this is true, since I bought Left 4 Dead to play together with my older brother. We originally shared games by like inserting and taking out our CDs of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Warcraft 3 while on our own PCs after the other had launched the game.

This is basically anime Mario Party except it takes 1/10th the time, doesn't require you to break your controllers by spinning the joysticks until they dislodge from the socket, and also costs like $2.

This is one of the rare games where I can say emphatically recommend to almost anyone I know.

As a kid, I was lucky enough to have an older brother who was a big nerd cool enough to get the cool RPGs throughout the years. I played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, Diablo 1 and 2, the Elder Scrolls series (mainly Morrowind and Oblivion), Dragon Age: Origins, the Mass Effect series, and a wealth of other story-based RPGs that built my love for the overall genre that expanded more over time when I was a teenager and adult.

I wasn't familiar with Larian Studios and their other work somehow: Some of their major recent work (Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2) was released in my blindspot during my years in college and late high school where I was focused on keeping my nose to the grindstone and playing my other online multiplayer, social games.

I'm 20 hours in to Baldur's Gate 3 and barely feel like I've scratched the surface while getting excited anticipating a second run through the game again and see what else I've missed. This game is phenomenal and is what the younger me likely imagined when thinking what 20 years of innovation, technology, and polish would do for RPGs. Just playing single-player the game is fantastic, and there's a whole extra multiplayer component that I haven't touched but might down the road.

It is a masterclass in video gaming that frankly embarrasses other AAA games that are at a higher price-point of $70+ nowadays. Every moment and interaction seems critical and important for the characters and side quests, there doesn't seem to be any bloat whatsoever. The game runs flawlessly on my machine, and I haven't encountered any obvious bugs. The game feels complete without any additional DLC, microtransactions, battlepass, and the devs haven't even planned any expansions yet because they were focused on making the core experience polished to a mirror sheen rather than focusing on exploiting and squeezing their fanbase for extra cash through optional paid content. It is an exemplar for AAA gaming, and it frankly highlights the sad state of the industry where large studios don't think it's worthwhile to invest years of development in crafting a well-made story instead of churning out steaming heaps of unfinished crap.

It is an amazing testament to early access where the developers used it to get continual feedback from the playerbase to make the final experience better, rather than just ship an unfinished game with EA as a shield from criticism. I never played it in early access since it just blended in with the crowd of EA games from my jaded POV, and I'm glad this came as a huge surprise out of nowhere for me. It wasn't even on my radar of awesome games set to release this year, and it somehow became my favorite game of 2023 by far and away.

I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone, and it gives me great joy to know that this type of game has enjoyed widespread recognition and hopefully inspires game developers to consider redoubling their efforts to even remotely achieve the standards set by Baldur's Gate 3 as not just an RPG, but a video game in general. It is a 10/10 masterpiece.

Nothing in this DLC matters, I just felt guilty only paying $59.99 for Baldur's Gate 3 when I spent $70+ on other triple AAA games this year.

Soundtrack is great and this is just icing to support the Larian Studios. Simple as.

This course is difficult but not in a fun way.

The best part of the courses:
1. Tentacles
2. It's only 9 holes so you're done sooner and can play other ones.

It's a great game, I've not had this much chaotic fun in a large-scale multiplayer shooter in decades. The goofiness and lighthearted nature communicated from the artstyle and the local chat in the game adds to the charm.

BattleBit is a love letter to the Battlefield series made with care and passion from obvious fans who got so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ butthurt when they kept getting killed by shotguns in Battlefield 4 that they decided to spend 7 years to make their own Battlefield game without shotguns.

0/10 no shotguns

It's like Minecraft except it emphasizes the raft part instead of the minec so much.
