Very fun game if you enjoy isometric turn-based strategy games. It begins rather slowly (and its plot is not exactly incredible) but the gameplay, especially the excellent side-quests, allows it to be fun throughout. Some menus are not very well laid-out so things such as crafting can be a pain in the butt and the lack of quest markers (of any sort) can make some quests obnoxious to complete due simply to a lack of information (especially when some quests can only be completed a dozen hours after they are initially acquired). The turn-based combat itself flows smoothly and the incredibly diverse uses and combinations of environmental effects can create interesting solutions to many of the games harder encounters.

I don't see a valid reason not to get this game if you are a fan of survival horror. Unlike many horror games, it is atomospheric, enthralling at times, and consistently strives to avoid cliche jump scares. The gameplay is satisfyingly challenging with ammo being scarce and the enemies taking a lot of lead to be put down. Never during the game did I feel as if I never had enough ammo, however, although it did have a tendency to punish inaccuracy, ie. if you missed 5 shots you might not have enough ammo to kill an enemy, but, as most enemies are quite slow and the aiming system feels pretty natural, this is usually never a problem. This game managed to scare me on more than one occasion, the enemies are essentially zombies, aim for the head, keep clicking, and they die. There is a good mix of bosses that consistently managed to be tough enough to generally require a number of tries, the only exception being the final boss, which kinda changes the game into an on-rails shooter rather than the tense third-person game you spend 13-25 hrs playing through. The gameplay is, as I've said, solid, but the story is generic and, while it is a fine enough story, it is nowhere near as good as the rest of the package, leaving me feeling let down at the end of the game but, at the same time, satisfied. One of the most unfortunate parts of this game are the plethora of ways that you can instantly die; bosses, normal enemies, and traps littered throughout the world all have the ability to smite you in one shot (although this doesn't apply to all of the aforementioned or, indeed, to most of their move sets) which can lead to some silly deaths that can leave you kinda salty. But, that just makes you try harder to get through the obstacles, and take every fight slowly, thoughtfully, not rushing through it like many other games. Thus the instant-deaths enhance the game and give it a deserved old-school feel with a modern look. I believe that this game is a staple in the library of anybody looking for a good horror game that is just as much about the scares and atmosphere as it is about the actual gameplay, two categories where this game has few real rivals.
