Wouldn't be playing this if I wasn't gifted it by a friend. Ubisoft manages to make Uno into a 4GB game and still demands that you have their launcher to play this game with people on Steam. I can go play Uno on Tabletop Sim and enjoy it a lot more than this.

I'm very glad a friend opted to buy me this game as a gift during a sale, because I can't justify buying it myself (especially not at its ridiculous $40 price tag). While there is an interesting story to unravel in here, the game itself has no meat to it; there's no character growth or development (your weapons and ships never get stronger), and the money you earn through missions is only used for cosmetics (some of which you can buy with real-world money instead, and that's not always going to work for you; there are different cosmetic bundles for the Windows 10/Xbox version and the Steam version, and even though you can link your Xbox Live account to Steam while playing, Xbox Live bundles will not work in the Steam version. I've learned that the hard way.). Pirate battles can be quite fun and are arguably the most fun the game has to offer outside of the tall tales, but its fleeting and only highlights how hollow the rest of the game is. Playing with friends also helps to alleviate that feeling of emptiness (would require you to convince friends to drop $40 on this game,, but if they do, the game is a better experience overall), though a counterpoint to that is the community around the game can be oddly nasty. Being an always-online game, you're playing with other people at all times for better or worse. It's not uncommon to find a player flying a Reaper's flag just itching to take you on (which is what they're suppose to do), but what's more common are the players flying other emissary flags trying to shoot you down and spamming voice chat telling you to kill yourself. It hurts to see Rare having fallen so far when it comes to game creation, especially when you can feel the love and passion they've put into it; despite all its issues, the game is well-polished and beautiful. It's just a shame it's all superficial.

Game was already showing bad signs booting up, with stuttering and sound quality issues persisting when getting into the game. Original clean and tidy inventory system has also been replaced with that god-awful oversized Jitterbug-styled inventory from BL2 and BL:TPS. After having spent some more time eyeing up the game, I've noticed that the new textures really haven't made the visuals any better either. Very off-put by this so-called "enhanced" edition. Just get the regular BL1 GOTY Edition to enjoy the simpler days on Pandora.
