Valentine's ass never gets old, and there's a feeling of incredible power when you're tearing things up as a ♥♥♥♥ diesel Aztec with a heavy machine gun. Clunky af, entertaining as hell, some cool twists on the genre, and a great goto game when you want to get your BR fix but are getting tired of your regular haunts.

Casual Game Engine (CGE) is a misleading name slapped on a somewhat neat idea. It's also a completely pointless application in its current state.

CGE is a tool to help make top-down shooters. It incorporates AngelScript, which has proven itself to be a solid language for game development, having been used in several successful titles such as Overgrowth and the Amnesia series.

However CGE isn't an IDE, but rather an executable that puts all the files in the directory you want it. In effect, it really doesn't do anything that you couldn't do yourself with a zip file and Windows Explorer.

For example, to create a new or template game, it simply copies a bunch of starting files into the directory you chose.

Once created, the actions that you can take on a project are
  • - Launch Game - This runs the game's EXE. If you have renamed or moved the EXE, this option will not work.
  • - Open Project - This only works if you use the VS Code IDE (not included with CGE).
  • - Open Directory - Opens the project directory in Windows Explorer.
  • - Manage Images - but only two of them. Anything else, you're on your own. This would have been more helpful if it simply opened your project's \media\gfx folder, but I guess they needed to try to justify some reason to have an EXE.
  • - Manage Localization - Didn't use it, but can't see it being anything more than a blank file creator or a folder opener.
  • - Delete Project - again, something easily done in Windows Explorer

So, the neat idea here is that it created a decent framework for creating a specific type of game - a top-down shooter. It comes with an extensive set of scripts to use, modify, or base one's own scripts off of. But that's it.

A user could effectively install CGE, click 'Create Template' to make a directory of the files, and then uninstall this app without losing a single feature. The author should have skipped the pointless EXE wrapper around the files and just put a link to a zip of them on their website.

A surprisingly fun shooter. Nice map layouts, with good ambush spots and cover positions. Biggest problem right now is lack of players.

Terrible in every way possible.

One of the defenses of this game is that negative reviews are by people who only played 20 minutes. Color em one of them. I really did want to play beyond that, but after the tutorial, the game would crash/reboot my PC.

Story/Dialog - in the first 10 minutes of gameplay, I was told that "the Russians" undressed me when I was unconscious and that one of the NPCs pretends sticks covered in [poop] is candy. It seemed to try too hard to be edge-y and just ran into the real of unsettling.

Graphics - They seem to be all over the place from some really crude low-poly stuff to some models that it looks like they tried to put effort into. A lot of it seems outdated. Look at the computer terminal in the room you start off in. Now compare that to a screenshot of a computer terminal from Fallout 3 (2008), STALKER (2007), or any other decade old game.

Stability - Wish I could play it, but can't get past the tutorial without it crashing my machine. I have reinstalled and verified several times. Same outcome.

My PC is an Acer Predator G3-605 / Intel i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz / 16384MB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti . My kids and I play GTA Online, Red Dead Online, and FarCry 5 regularly. They all run without a hitch. This game is simply buggy and not stable.

I also recently saw that Steam still has the previous version - The Skies - BETA - available so the chance of one or both folding, cannibalizing the other's audience, or simply causing confusion is probably rather high.

Red Dragon Software had less red flags than this product.

A quarter of the features and fraction of the stability of the 3DGameMaker that this studio had created years earlier. Extremely limited documentation. In some cases, ZERO documentation. That said, the program does EXACTLY what it claims to do.

"Populate your game by placing down characters, weapons and other game items, then press one button to build your game, ready to play and share."

If you plan to do only that and nothing more, it really is a non-technical and fun game maker.

AppGameKit Classic offers a lot of features and flexibility for an amazingly low price.

Compiles/exports for multiple platforms - Windows EXE, Android APK, or HTML5. Other game making apps charge sometimes up to $150 to add support for some of those platforms, but AGK Classic creates each without the need for additional purchases.

Advanced programming for those that want/need it - Tier 1 is for programmers who know or prefer BASIC. High level programming to get the job done. The documentation describes Tier 2 as "the ability to use the AGK command set within a C++ application." Tier 2 is for those that want more control over the AGK player and the performance of their application.

An extensive collection of guides, assets and examples - The example code that comes with AGK Classic seems to cover the commands and common apps pretty well. Commenting in the examples could be better, but commands show their usage when you are typing them in the IDE. Also pressing F1 when a command is highlighted, brings up a web page of usage, description, and often examples for that command.

The IDE : Lots of features, no clutter - I found the IDE to provide me with all the customizable colors, syntax highlighting, code tagging/folding, debugging, and editing features that I needed without crowding the screen with buttons, panels, and options.

Although my Steam profile indicates very little usage of the app, I have had (and used) AppGameKit for several years now as a standalone non-Steam app. Of the various game-focused languages and game makers that I have tried, AppGameKit has been the best.

  • Affordable price
  • Easy to learn
  • Full-featured
  • Great support/dev team
  • Helpful forum community

Was going to describe this as "Bunny hop with rockets like it's 1999" but when I went to the webpage to read more about it I saw that "Frag like it's 1999" is their tagline, so I guess the rather limited and unoriginal gameplay is the plan.

Tower defense with decent graphics. Fun to play, nice progression of difficulty. Because it's not F2P, there's never "that level" that feels like a paywall. Definitely worth the money.

Simple, addictive, and hours of fun. Victory over the big weorms is extremely satisfying, and the dynamic leaderboard makes for some great competitive fun. Roll up a worm, dress it up, and see how long (literally) you can last!

Civilization VI is a strange new world. It seems to bring back a good bit of the SimCity-ness of the original. The leaders are bigger jackasses than in any previous Civ. It's like they learned how to interact with people from EVE Online mission agents. It took a couple days, but I'm finally getting used to what seems to be the most poorly crafted Fog of War system ever.

After several days of playing, Civ 6 has really grown on me, becoming more engaging and entertaining as I slowly master the various mechanics to city management and global diplomacy.

However, had this not been a series that I was already a big fan of, I don't think I would have given the game more than an hour before uninstalling. First impressions and all that.
