Early Access Review
The core of the game is very addicting and the systems are executed well enough to keep you playing a long while. However, the longer you play the more you notice the "early acess".
You will fight the pals ai all the time.
In battle your pals are very reliant on the terrain. The rockier it is, the worse it will fight. For that i use 3 examples from my team. When you give a pal 3 range attacks it will look for a spot far enough away to attack and if it does not find such a spot it will keep looking. My Katress was hopping back gainst a wall a whole minute and never attacking a close ranged pal. The ai of Suzaku Aqua also seems to have trouble finding a spot to attack just gliding around. This was especially frustrating against the tower bosses, which are a timed encounter. Another example is the move "Powertackle" from Anubis, where it charges the enemy, except when there is a small ledge in the way. Then it will keep charging the ledge until you recall it.
Getting further into the game you will be dependend base production for higher gear, which will be semi automated by pals. So you will be dealing with the base pal ai.
First off, teleporting away from your base always hase a chance to break something. Pals will faint randomly, clip through the ground, get stuck outside the base and cannot find the way back. What is also very hard to figure out is, if a pal is able to pathfind to something behind a structure. For example the best bed for a pal to build takes up roughly one stone foundation of space and you can walk perfectly fine over it. The pals think otherwise. Even the biggest pals will be by the bed if you put them too close together to mess up their pathfinding. They will walk in place trying to pathfind until you remove what is blocking them.
Farming also breaks from time to time, where my transport pals just stand next to the berries unable to do anything until i remove the berries.
So much for the negatives that stood out to me personaly, on to the positive.
Being an active participant in the pal-battle ist incredibly fun. You can recall your pal at any time, as to say when the enemy is about to unleash a high cooldown smackdown. This dodges the hit and you can just send your pal out again.
Being able to change your pals attacks on the fly and also being able to give your pal any move that is in a fruit makes for great planning. In my time I have not noticed any restriction on the number or type of moves a pal can have.
The basebuilding, although very much prone to breaking, is still very fun to wrap your head around. The idea of your pals having different viable uses for certain aspects of the base is a great incentive to look for a variety to catch. Which is also incetivised by the 10-catch experience bonus.
At the time of writing this I have played 129 hours on a singleplayer map on normal difficulty.
tldr: strong start, janky ai, janky basebuilding, great idea!
