I played the free weekend and look to be honest the game play was "OK".
It took a little bit to get my head around, how each character differed and their roles.
After that, the game play was so average it's not really worth talking about.

As a hunter, you start out with very little and you scamper off and eat some stuff and get shields.
Hunter evolves a couple times and hey presto the hunter just runs in like rambo and all the humans die.
As a hunter, if you ever were in trouble or close to dying you just.... Jumped away.
Humans had no chance of catching you. Just eat a few little creatures as you jump around willy nilly and fully regain the shield.

As a human you run around the map looking for the hunter, this is a tiresome boring process.
Which in the end humans just scatter until someone comes across it.
Then comes the excitement of killing the hunter. Now if the hunter is level 3 evolved "gg" and lets all go back to requeueing for next map.
Also that blue teleporting hunter? Seriously? I dont think I was ever in a team that came close to killing it. OP much?
Human health stats are a joke. 2 hits from the monster and the human is dead, no chance of recovery either if knocked back either.
The hunter is on the human and jetpacking out is highly unlikely.
(Before people tell me its just my crappy computer, no I am playing on a GTX 980 GPU with an i7 processor)

I can see why the player base is so weak and its mostly due to the limitations and the price point.
If the game started its price point at where it is now, I am sure the player base would be bigger.
Utter greed is all it was at the start. Now the panic because we are all watching that player base dwindle away.
It shall be interesting to see how much it sustains after this free weekend.
I wont be buying this and I will be removing it off my wishlist as I cant see it lasting much longer without some over hauling.

Somethings to think about if the creators even read this.
Games like TF2/CS thrive because there is customization and the whole "Look, something new and shiny" whereas this game just doesnt seem to have that.
TF2 runs the same maps all the time and people play them over and over.
Game creators need to ask themselves this: "How do I make a game with the same gameplay, but make people want to do it again and again?".
Simple answer is, make it so its never the same. TF2 does this by giving people 9 different classes and weapon choices coming out your ears.
You lose a round, you change out your loadout to suit. No option for this in evolve.
Why cant we choose how many medics we have in a team or how many damage classes we have?
Give the players a CHOICE! Its that simple.
