I don't often write reviews, but the experience for this game has been breathtaking.

While I'm not exactly fond of games with parkour, i.e. Dying Light, Assassin's Creed, etc, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst lured me in with its beautiful world and aesthetic. I suppose I'll just split my thoughts on looks and gameplay apart to make this review easier.

Looks:
The world of Mirror's Edge is supposedly a dystopian one, but at the same time it's one of the most beautiful and breathtaking dystopian worlds I have ever seen. It's legitimately hard for me to type any of this stuff out properly without being overwhelmed by how much I love the aesthetic of this world. The clean white buildings and the vibrant lacquered walls. This all heavily reminds me of game maps that are very early in development and have no textures, resulting in a plain white colour. At the same time, it also reminds me of Source Engine testing maps, which share a colour of both white and orange. But most importantly, I constantly feel the inspiration of a mobile game called "Arknights".

Now, this mobile game I'm talking about has no correlation whatsoever to Mirror's Edge, to which you are free to ignore this part, if not recommended. The stage selection in Arknights is incredibly similar when you view the map in Mirror's Edge. The countless blank buildings and land share such a serene view, and some of the early levels in AK have such a similarity with the more white-orange parts of Catalyst's world. Now that that's aside, I can finally top it off by saying that the developers have done an outstanding job with the visuals. Truly breathtaking.

Gameplay:
As a parkour game, it obviously allows you to run, scurry, and climb all over the world, much like any other. Mechanics such as wall-running and springboarding all let you perform unique methods of traversing buildings and other interestingly designed areas. It seemed a bit complicated for a parkour plebeian like me but the parkour mechanics in this game are actually pretty simple. The game also gives you a linear path towards your designated objective, but it's often regarded as "Not the best path." This means that you are encouraged to create your own path. Players are who more experienced with parkour will probably be more accustomed to this, but you are still able to follow the more linear paths given to you.

Regarding combat, it's a bit different. I often hear that the combat was much more better in the original Mirror's Edge. Because I have not played the original Mirror's Edge, I am unable to properly make comparisons, but I will most certainly play the original to see if such claims are true, but for now I will state my current opinions. The combat is...interesting. Kicks and punches is all your given, and you are to make the best of them via the environment. Unfortunately, I am very dull when it comes to knowing how tf to use the environment, so I often struggled with fighting. Things like walls, springboards, hell even the floor will make life much more convenient in fighting the enemies of this game, as simply throwing the same punch or kick will eventually punish you. A peculiar experience, this game's combat system.

These next parts will be brief. I'm not exactly sure how the story holds up in regards to the original Mirror's Edge, but I will say that it's not exactly bad. Sure, it's sorta filled with your basic characters archetypes, but the overall experience is certainly admirable. The soundtrack is also quite good. It's simple, filled with electronic(?) beats and such. It helps set the mood while running across buildings and falling on your ass.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this game, especially for those who are willing to uptake a bit of parkour.
