This isn't really supposed to be played like HuniePop. It's not really the Bejeweled type of match 3 that people are assuming it is - I was browsing through reviews and I thought I should post this video I saw this person post elsewhere (since I'm more or less reposting this video when someone else showed it originally and that's how I found it, I'll provide a link to their profile to give them credit and all: http://steamcommunity.com/id/risona,) since it does a better job at illustrating the kind of puzzle game this is than I couldand how it's fundamentally different than HuniePop's gameplay. Skip to 4 minutes and 30 seconds in for the best example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGhZoOdnn9M&feature=youtu.be&t=4m30s

Felt somebody needed to say this, at least. This isn't just relying on the RNG to give you a good board like most of the reviews here are saying nor is it just luck based - you hold on to your piece for 10 seconds and you use it to move other pieces around the board to set it up in your favor like the person in this video just did.

Say what you will about the music, the repetitive voice lines, and the recycled CGs, but the gameplay isn't broken or RNG-heavy. It's just that people see a puzzle-based dating sim with this style, assume it's trying to be HuniePop, and then get confused when it's not really like HuniePop. That's about it, really.

Renowned Explorers: International Society is one of the biggest time vampires I've come across on steam. I have owned it for a little over 24 hours at the time of writing this review and I've got about 12 or so hours logged already, and I fully anticipate to log many more.

Lots of possible party combinations in tandem with the uniqueness of every character and the roguelike exploration elements make for something that I just can't get tired of playing. I like to experiment and try out various combinations and and see how they turn out with different playstyles.

The combat is refreshingly unique - it isn't too far removed from the type of turn based combat you'd normally see in these kinds of videogames, but it does a lot to distinguish itself from the normal with the use of moods and approach tactics and you can get rewarded for following certain tactics and moods for battles. You can write various research papers, which act as this game's tech tree, and further these rewards.

There's also over 100 different treasures to find in the game's state at the time I write this review, and it sounds like they will be adding more in due time.

I would like to see more expeditions, though, because the current con I have for this game is that, being a roguelike, I come across the same events too often. While there are plenty of events in each expedition, all of which are unique, this game would greatly benefit from having a wider variety of expeditions to choose from due to its nature. There are enough expeditions in the current game to keep me satisfied for a good while, though.

This game is tragically overlooked and I would rate it as a must buy. There's something here for everybody.

In 7 minutes of playing this game, I have seen Bubsy get killed by:

Some random creature sneezing on him
Getting into a car
Falling into water
Falling on the ground (he melts because of this)
Smacked in the face by a sewage grate

I shall continue playing to see the various ways Bubsy dies

EDIT: he can touch enemies and fall into pieces of glass, effectively killing him

EDIT 2: http://i.imgur.com/ie8gEdS.png every time i die he makes this face at me, it scares me

EDIT 3: 13 minutes in, just tried eating ice cream, could not taste it. Game possibly related.

EDIT 4: god help me

EDIT 5: god is dead, there is no hope

This game, man...

tl;dr at the bottom

The Hotline Miami series is definitely one that you need to play in chronological order to fully understand the greatness of it - this game is an excellent, excellent, excellent follow up to the original Hotline Miami. It's just that, though - an excellent follow up. If you're interested in getting into this series, definitely start off with the first game.

I'm someone who actually prefers this game to the original, however. If you played the first game, the levels are more similar to the biker levels after Jacket's story wrapped up than the original Jacket style. If you haven't played the first game, stop reading this review and go play the first game because at this point in time this review is worthless to you.

In short, though - less focus on masks and varied gameplay styles and more focused on characters. It's less open ended as a result of this, and while removing the Jacket style in favor of characters with set abilities for each level is something I'd normally cry heresy over, this game manages to execute it extremely well to the point where I didn't even care that I wasn't given a huge variety of masks to choose from and had a lot of gameplay freedom taken away. This sounds much worse than it is, trust me - this game hits the nail on the head with what it's trying to do and it's excellent as a result.

It also is a lot more difficult than the first game, I think; the levels are larger and there can be a pretty serious loss of progress once you get towards the end and die, as opposed to the original's tendency to have smaller levels. As a result, there is a lot more enemies. There's also less masks, as I noted earlier, and that can create a handicap for those who relied on certain masks in the first game and being able to have more variety.

It's as violent as ever, thankfully. This game pulls no punches in how graphic it is, and it benefits from as much for certain. One of the things I love about both games of this series is that it gives me an outlet to battle stress by allowing me to vent my psychotic urges to just beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of anybody I can. Much blood, very graphic executions (except for evan lol), but I might just give the first game the edge in the gore and violence department if that much is your thing.

As for the story, it pieces a bunch of the events of the first game into context and gives them meaning, as the first game could be pretty incoherent and schizophrenic with the story it tried to tell. It was an effective stylistic choice, for certain, but this game serves as providing context for the events of the first game and it's why I'm telling you to go play the first game if you haven't played it yet. This game expects you to know the first game. Back on topic, though - the story is surprisingly powerful in this game. From memorable characters such as Richter to Beard to the Fans, it manages to show just how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up everything is in a way that has a lot of powerful moments. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into any plot details, but the story is fantastic and surprisingly gave me the feels on a few occasions.

Lastly, the soundtrack - it's as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥' as ever. Seriously, the soundtrack is even better than the first game and can hit like a truck. This is seriously one of the greatest soundtracks in any game ever and I can totally get behind the soundtrack itself costing as much as the game - it's actually worth it.

tl;dr - this game expects you to know the first so go play that if you haven't already. If you have, there's an excellent story being told here alongside some absolutely amazing gameplay and one of the greatest soundtracks you'll find anywhere.

I always found it funny how you could kill black security guards and answer their pagers in a thick Russian accent and dispatch would go for it.

It's even better now that you can answer pagers in a language that's not even English and the guy on the other end responds with "Yeah, well, you know how it can be sometimes"
