SteamOS 1/22/14 alchemist_beta update
We have just updated the alchemist_beta release. Changes include:
  • Added debian-installer and debian-cd source packages to the repo
  • Fixed mouse cursor disappearing in Wargame games by stubbing out all pointer grabs from the modeswitch inhibitor hook
  • Fixed hotplugging USB sound devices by re-enabling Pulseaudio dynamic module loading
  • Changed PolicyKit configuration to give members of the sudo group admistrative rights (GitHub issue #115)
  • Merged Debian GRUB updates
  • Fixed kernel updates breaking WiFi on Brix Pro boxes by moving the experimental rtl8821ae driver into a monolithic staging driver (many thanks to Greg KH!)
  • Fixed Logitech K400 wireless keyboards

Go Hawks!

Don't know if this is normal behavior, but when I switch to desktop mode, click "return to steam" icon, and switching to desktop again, a password is requested this time.
But, if instead of clicking "return to steam" icon, I logout from desktop to return to BPM, and enter desktop mode again, no password is requested.

That behavior has always been there. I noticed it awhile ago and wondered myself. Seemed like a crude way to remind steam-machine users about an ongoing desktop session. That's just my best guess... Kinda like screen locking in a multi-user system.

Yes, that only happens if you set a password to the 'desktop' account; it locks your desktop session on the way out. If you log out of the desktop session the whole session is destroyed and re-created next time you go in, so you don't get the lock prompt there. There's probably an easy way to disable the locking behavior but I haven't looked at it yet.

Glad to see the fix for the wifi on the Brix Pro. Thanks for the updates! :)

what exactly does that bit about Pulseaudio mean? [pardon my ignorance]

It means plugging in any usb microphone or heasdset will now work should have a better chance of being able to work as expected.

My Intel HDMI audio is still not working unfortunately, and hasn't worked since the first beta.

The HDMI/Display Port 3 audio is just silent for some reason, even though it's showing as active/unmuted in the Gnome control panel. I've gone through all the workarounds here :-

https://github.com/valvesoftware/steamos/issues/12

And still no joy, my motherboard is an ASRock H77M-ITX, and I'm using the i3-3225 w/HD 4000 IP. I guess yet another re-install is on the cards?

What does you /etc/pulse/system.pa look like, specifically at the bottom?

I would recommend giving this a read since to me it summarizes why a majority of Linux users dropped Gnome 3 and how KDE, Mate, Cinnamon and other environments are more popular. There's even a whole wikipage about the mess.

People won't spend most of their time in the desktop anyway and Gnome 3 is perfectly fine. Apart from the "We hate change" crowd it is very popular and Gnome 3.10 is a very good release. On /r/Linux, which is mostly visited by very technical Linux users, Gnome 3 still is the most used DE according to the last survey[docs.google.com] with over 3000 reponses. Even in Arch Linux's own package statistics[www.archlinux.de] it's used just as much as KDE. All the "majority of Linux users did this" claims are always just made up on the fly. Gnome is the ony major desktop that tries to take advantage and integrate everything that Linux has to offer like systemd, kdbus, wayland to do all kinds of cool modern stuff.

I don't get why people always have to evangelize the desktop they use and piss on other desktops. It's just software people not a religion.
