XCOM2: War of the Chosen is probably the peak of the Firaxis XCOM games, so if you're only going to get one game in the franchise, that's the one to buy. That said, if you like unforgiving tactics and strategy games, buy and play XCOM: Enemy Within before moving on to the sequel.

The vibes are very different, as XCOM: EW is more of a "keep things under control" sort of plate spinning exercise while trying to learn about and defeat the mysterious alien menace, and so is heavy on 90s conspiracy themes involving the Shadow Government and What They Don't Want You To Know and etc, whereas XCOM2 is more of a schlock action guerrilla warfare "sim" that's got a more Battlefield Earth feel to it. XCOM2 is more polished and content-rich overall, but with all the toys it gives you it is paradoxically easier than XCOM: EW since there's so many ways to make squads of unkillable super soldiers.

If you've somehow never heard of XCOM, this is a game about repelling an alien invasion. You do this by leading an elite international fighting force against aliens in a variety of scenarios on a tactical grid map pitting your wits and positioning skills against the alien's superior technology, numbers, and special abilities. Between battles you have a base management strategic layer where you attempt to research and reverse-engineer alien technology in order to improve your ability to fight back, and ultimately find a way to stop the invasion for good.

It's dope.

It can be frustrating, so trigger warning for that. You can get Quite Unlucky on any given turn, which can make it difficult or impossible to win. Managing risk in combat is probably the most important skill you can have in this game, and sometimes the best option is to order your valuable soldiers to ditch on a losing mission so you don't lose the whole squad. The fact that you will inevitably suffer some brutal defeats makes eventual victory all the sweeter.

Final note: While you may want to start on a lower difficulty in order to learn the ropes (or if you're just here for the story,) if you're instead here for the challenge (which, to my mind, is the principal draw of the game,) you won't want to play on lower than Classic difficulty. This is mostly because on difficulties lower than this, the enemy AI is "shackled," meaning the computer deliberately makes suboptimal decisions and notably doesn't (or rarely) allow the aliens to use grenades or their special abilities.

tl;dr good game, hard game, sometimes frustrating game, frequently deeply satisfying game.
