The other thing is that the first few hours on master or legendary are very difficult without a follower.
In a next (single player) installment of TES I would like to see more possible interaction with followers. And of course improved AI would be welcome.
You mentioned Serana. One of the advantages of Serana during the Dawnguard quests is that it gives me the feeling to accomplish something for somebody else.
This is something that also could be expanded on. The possibility to become part of the storyline of an NPC.
Also on legendary some times, we got on dangerous situations and we need a tanker for a while, mainly when you're leveling up secondary skills with no perks on it, so what could be better than a mule? A tanker mule of course.
