Half-Life

Half-Life

Ubuntu - Half-Life 1 runs very slowly.
I decided to install Half-Life on my old computer, which is of course very old but still a lot newer than Half-Life. On Windows Vista with V-sync, I run at a consistent 60 FPS. On Ubuntu, I get 11 FPS on the same settings. Kind of a huge difference there.

Any ideas on how to speed the game up?

(Computer is dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu 14.04 LTS)

Edit: Turning the resolution way down put the framerate up to 95, but the sound was awful. And the graphics were terrible. Guess I'll be running this in Windows.

That's what you get for trying to run your games under Linux :D

I've found steam in general runs slow on Ubuntu.

That shouldn't be happening.

What are your specs?
What video card are you using?
What does running the following line in the console say?
glxinfo|grep -i direct\ rendering\\\|vendor\ string

Have you installed the graphic card driver?

I tried this, and it worked for me.

I made my test on a multiplayer map ( lambda_bunker )
-with no start option, fps are between 7 and 14. Slow and stuttering fps and sound.
-with the start option that you stated, it looks like a nearly constant 45 fps ( fluctuating quickly from maybe 38 to 50, but showing between 42 and 48 most of the time )

Resolution ingame 1680x1050 ( the only one available. I don't know why )

It's still not a high frame rate for HL1 I think for this machine ( even in 1680x1050 ).

Using Nvidia driver 340.96:
-OpenGL settings on hi performances
-PowerMizer on Auto ( when I set it to max performance it shows a constant 38 fps instead of 45. ^^ funny )

Computer specs:
OS: Ubuntu 14.04.3 64-bit kernel 3.13.0-68
Lenovo Thinkpad R61
CPU: Core 2 Duo T8100
GPU: Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M
4 gigs of ram
så slow in the ass
