What the levels are for?

I saw that, we gain battlepoints from every played match. Here''s my question: what do we do whit it? Is it worth something? Or just for fun to be challenging? Or is it necessary?
I mean do I get some benefits from my level or not?

It also affects matchmaking. You wont see a level 1 go against a level 40, for example.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't influence matchmaking at all.

Blatant lie. I was lvl 9 when i had to fights a full lvl ~20 team.

I don't think it affects anything. There are ways to artificially boost your level by buying Battle Point boosters or playing a lot of games in game modes such as Diretide and Greeviling, where you don't get win or loss stats but you do get battle points. It wouldn't make sense to base matchmaking on your level because of this.

All that happens is you get an item every time you level up.
