new player, confused

I just played this game for the first time today. I was on a small server and it seemed i was supposed to capture a point in the middle of the map. As soon as i did that a guy on the other team starts cursing at me and insulting me like i did something wrong. I told him I was new and so thats why I didn't know how to play. He said that I was lying.

i don't understand what i did wrong, can anyone explain? Was I not supposed to capture the point? I don't want to play this game if this is the kind of reaction I'm going to get from the community.

One of two things happpened:
You were doing the right thing, and he was angry that you were winning the game
Or
You wandered onto a server where everybody was being "friendly" and not fighting, instead goofing around, taunting, and playing with sandviches. They probably wanted to keep the cap neutral (I assume it was a king of the hill map) so that they would have infinite time to derp about.
Or they were deathmatching and wanted infinite time for that, either one is possible.

As a side note, as long as the capture point is neutral on king of the hill, time doesn't count down, so it gives people unlimited time to mess around.

phlog

But you can use anything n boot camp. Robots don't have feelings..

This actually seems likely, I wish they had told me instead of just insulting me, I genuinely didn't understand why he was so upset.

Try playing a new server, maybe a server that has a gamemode that you think can be easy. If you still aren't good, try playing as Engineer, and build in a spot where the other team doesn't usually go.

People overreact a lot to things they probably shouldn't. Just continue doing what you're doing, and if folks give you trouble, find another server or just ignore them.

Do you remember what map it was? A few maps are considered "fun" maps and people get upset if you complete objectives on them.

Play on Dustbowl (cp_dustbowl) where there are quite a few noobs and no-one talks (or insults) play soldier (easy to play, hard to master) and eventually learn to play other classes by watching them

So you're new to the game? Welcome. First off, try to find servers using the server browser, which have tag "valve"
Secondly, try to avoid these forums as much as possible. Usually only more cursing and crying about game balance.

If it's Arena, some people whine if you try to cap in pretty much any circumstance unless the last enemy is simply hiding.
