Five Nights at Freddy's 4

Game Theory vs. Literary Theory
Dear MatPat of Game Theorists,

My name is Doctor Script, I've been posting on these steam community boards since FNAF4 was released, but have been reading them some time before that. In coming to understand what the community believes of the story line and the presence Game Theory holds, I humbly offer a challenge:

I'd like to have an academic debate with you.

I'm a student at a near by university, getting my degree in Literary Theory. I happen to live in the Los Angles area, and I will travel for Five Nights At Freddy's debates. I have experience in front of a camera, and I have experience in Theater as well. I'm eloquent, I'm well read, and I have some very different reads of the game's lore then usually discussed. Since I study story-telling methods and techniques (My Master's dissertation was on German Fairy Tales, and was very impressed with Gaijin Goomba's expression of the similarities of FNAF lore and Boogeymen myths), but I have a few issues with your methodology, your conclusions and your recent videos post FNAF4's release however.

While I could complain and try to shout louder, I thought the idea of an academic debate would be much more enjoyable for your fans to see. You can host it on your channel or GTLive, as you prefer. You can even choose the judge, as this is literally my field of study and I would hate to take an academic advantage over you. I don't mind if you choose anyone from your wife to Cawthon himself, if they can be produced to over see the debate. I would suggest 6 rounds, focused on questions posed by your fans with the intent to explore our own individual understandings of the lore. You can go longer or shorter as you wish, and we would have to mindful of the technical difficulties you have a problem with when it comes to FNAF live streams. Whether or not we allow the novel to be canon is completely up to the debater being asked, as to my knowledge, Cawthon has never confirmed it to be strictly canonical. I would recommend not admitting it to be canonical, as it would be a shame to lose viewers under threat of spoilers, but I don't want to restrict you in any manner.

I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to set up a 'straw poll' of some form to allow your fans to vote at the end of the debate for who won. Now, as for terms of engagement; If I were to win this debate, all I would ask for is an animated intro sequence as I have difficulty animating it myself. I don't have a dedicated team in my corner. If I were to lose, I will offer my services as a writer, researcher and provide numerous content ideas for your shows (Film Theory, or Game Theory as you need/prefer). Things from Philosophical musings of The Dark Knight Joker, Obi-won Kenobi as an Undercover Sith Lord, do Sims have the right to life, and a collection of 'Monster' deconstructions that could be a whole months worth of content onto their own.

The very fact that you are reading this means that the fans have spoken out in interest. Hopefully you've had a flood of tweets chanting our names into an intellectual's arena. I have no qualms being the underdog in terms of popularity, but I think if you want to give FNAF a proper send off, you ought to let it go down as it was born into the collective subconscious; People making bold statements and arguing over pixels and jump scares over the internet. You claim to be the smartest show in gaming...

I, humbly, wish to see you live up to it.

I'll be waiting. I hope to hear from you soon, MatPat. You've been instrumental in my research of the games and exactly how much content lies within it. Now the question is, can the student exceed the Master? Only one way to find out.

If you'd like to see my musings (And don't care to sift through the hundreds of posts I've made on the community boards) you can find the bulk of my theory Here and my timeline Here although both are a little dated since I posted them. I have done some fine tuning since then and filled in a few gaps. The skinny of it is a deconstruction with some Structuralist techniques to fill in the missing portions of the core story line, and using the underlying themes and symbols of the games to put the missing pieces into place properly. I believe the puppet is the Missing Children Killer and that Victim is the twin brother of the spirit in Mangle. I also believe the kids that lift Victim to the bite of '87 are the withered animatronics, but that starts to get awkward to dissect in brief words. The ultimate point is that we never see kids wear masks that aren't already dead.

So, my offer is extended. You can message me at your leisure, MatPat.

...

If you are interested in seeing this theory thread enacted in real time, Steam and Reddit users, (or, otherwise, wouldn't be satisfied with MatPat simply talking about FNAF as a content filler with his friends to send it off) Then I ask you to Tweet @MatPatGT with your question, and http://steamcommunity.com/app/388090/discussions/0/494632506578950831/ #GTLive, #GamevsLit.

Mr. Cawthon, You always have very interesting questions to pose, I'd love to see what you'd want us to discuss as well. You know, if you're interested. :D

Even better!! On that note, do you have a YouTube channel? If so then you might have a better chance reaching MatPat there.

I do, but I'm having issues with creating videos. I have never had to edit a video before, and it's not nearly as easy as it looks.

Understood. It's an odd art and not very widespread among the masses.

That is the theory... A game theory? err... cut?

I'd like to see this. I seem to remember Matpat being a member of some sort of debating society, although I could be remembering that wrong. Matpat's one theorizing flaw is how fast his mind works, which causes him to say he'll explain something, but move to the next thought and never get to explaining that point. With an opponent, those mistakes could be pointing out and avoided. I'd like to see this. Good luck, I hope this happens!

Welp, seems as though things are on now. If only Rydi lived nearby, then it could be a three-way debate. But alas, she's unfortunately been separated by the unforgiving tides of the Pacific (and the Atlantic, but no one really talks about that sea very much).

Yeah, honestly, I think if given the choice, I would do a live debate between Rydi before MatPat, but one of these is more realistic then the other. Rydi is, possibly, the most passionate theorist I have ever met. I don't know if she would handle having a judge present well though, I'm pretty confident she'd end up clocking him out and flipping her podium as soon as I say "Literary".

Sounds exactly like something Rydi would do XD Honestly, I'm surprised that so many people here became so accepting of Dream Theory after MatPat's video. I mean, last time I recall everyone here pretty much agreed that Game theory, although providing very entertaining content, isn't exactly the most reliable source for the FNAF lore (he didn't even go that much into detail in regards to the Dream Theory itself). Thankfully, if you do happen to get a hold of MatPat, I can only hope that you and him both are able to straighten out the facts a bit more in terms of what we know. I wish you luck on you venture(s), for who knows what it will bring? *salutes*

This seems cool! It would also be awesome for Scott to be the debate moderator, like he said!!!

*salutes* Thank you!

Well, I'm only going to hear from him if enough people generate enough buzz on twitter. I think it'll be fun, and I would love to pick his brain on some tips for getting my YouTube career moving. I think we can both be gentlemen about it in the end, but we will see. Here's hoping for the best!
