Community Crunch 27
Greeting Survivors!

Welcome to the 27th issue of the Community Crunch! To those unaware this is a topic which primarily consist of content to share, made by the community, for the community! As well as any little changes I want to make survivors aware about, which happen within our community ;).

Alienware Modding Contest!

Hello Survivors!

It’s been quite a few months since we first announced the Alienware Modding Contest! The submission period has now ended and there have been a number of fantastic submissions for the contest, we’ve been thoroughly impressed with what we’ve seen for such a short period of time, especially considering how relatively new the game and the ADK is itself! So congratulations to all those who’ve entered.

Community Contests!

Every week for the foreseeable future we’ll be hosting two contests for our Community Crunch. Remember for this week (and the foreseeable future!) we'll also be accepting entries for the newly introduced: Warpaint images, human and dino tattoos/bodyart for the #ARKArt award as well as bases both on your Brontos and Rafts for #ARKitect! Can’t wait to see the platform bases, the ships and tattoos/bodyart! Also can’t wait to see your new bases in the new biomes!

ARKitect

This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best base for the week. Survivors will need to upload their screenshots to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

We’ll be judging the bases not on the quality of the screenshot, but on the unique designs, functionality, and the use of in-game tools available to you! At the end of each week, the screenshot for the best base will be featured in our #ARKitect section of the Community Crunch!

The #ARKitect award for Community Crunch 27 goes to…

It’s a tie!

Congratulations as you both are this weeks #ARKitects! Keep up the great work guys :)

Honourable Mentions / Runner ups

We’ve got a few runners up for ARKitect this week too! So big shout-out to them and we’ll be in touch too ;)!

#ARKArt

The second contest which will take place is for the #ARKArt award! This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best piece of art for that week using our new Per-Pixel painting system! Similarly to #ARKitect, Survivors will need to upload their masterpiece to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then also post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

We’ve also got a little request! Do you lovely painter's mind uploading your ART PNT files so others could also give them a whirl? http://arkpaint.com/ has recently launched and will be a great place to do so! Be sure to provide a link in your next post :)

The #ARKArt award for Community Crunch 27 goes to…

Congratulations again, as you this weeks #ARKArt champion! Keep up the great work :)

Workshop Spotlight!

Workshoppers: DavidBC & salcarr

Workshop Items: Total Conversion: Ark Pirate World

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=547377246

Survivors, this week we're joined by DavidBC & salcarr and they're here to answer some questions and talk about their mods with us. Thanks for joining us! Do you think you could introduce yourself to the community, and let us know about the mods you're currently working on?

salcarr: My name is Sal, I go by salcarr on steam. I am a game programmer. I am currently working on two mods, one being our newly popular Ark Pirate world with David and then my Stargate mod.

DavidBC: Okay so hi everyone, you can call me David so in life I'm a student, and we are currently working on Ark Pirate World.

Nice to meet you guys! So recently your Total Conversion has caught quite a bit of attention - how did it all get started? Have you guys known each other previously or worked on other projects together?

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=553458567

salcarr & DavidBC: No we have never worked together, it's the first time. when I saw the modding contest I started to make a mod, I don't know how I got this idea but yep I like pirates, so why not make a pirate mod. I start to work on this project for 2 weeks, but it's a lot of work. So I decided to look for people to help me on the unreal engine forum and Salcarr sent me a message offering to help me with the mod as he thought it was a great idea.

It’s good to see the community come together :) So tell us more about the TC! How would you describe it, and the long-term goals to someone who has yet to try it?

salcarr & DavidBC: Who hasn't dreamed about Pirates and dinos ? You can play on a giant map, look for treasure with your crew on your boat and with your dino. You have a lot of gameplay, you can play as a pirate, or a trader and exchange with other players or buy and sell items to npc. You can discover new places, find resources to sell them, or build incredible structures, or plant tabacco and sugar canes.

As for long-term goals we are planning to add a lot of features to add more gameplay, like a bounty system that will set bounties on players who attack and kill other players, new shops, new resources, new ships, weapons, and equipment.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=553458590

This sounds like a pretty advanced TC! There’s quite a few systems in place already, that’s pretty impressive! Tell us more about your ships and the plans for them as I expect a lot of people to be interested in that!

salcarr & DavidBC: The ships are huge, plenty of walking space :). There is an upper deck where you steer the ship and then the main deck where you build structures on top of, perhaps players want a war drum to sound when they are getting ready to raid another ship. You can get the ships at the shop if you have enough gold.

As far as customization we haven't added anything yet but we do plan to add some customization such as perhaps buying certain flags for your sail as the only options now is the pirate flag and the Santa Maria sail. We are still thinking of other ways to improve customizing of the ships but you can paint the ships for now.
Right now the ships are based off the raft in the game so they work the same, but we will be adding more speed as we believe the ship should move a lot faster than the raft. When we start making more ships we may decide to build add a level in the ship itself for a lower deck or like the captain's quarters. Basically a player opens a door and with level streaming we can make it load a small map that would be the inside of the ship. Of course this is just an idea planned for now as we won't know how achievable this is until we start working on it, but I think we feel confident enough to get it done.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=553458655

That sounds pretty damn awesome! How are the ships designed? Are you guys creating your own assets for them or do you have plans to in the future?

salcarr & DavidBC: The ship was purchased but we also had to import it into maya to remove extra items that were not needed. We had to scale the ship and separate materials before importing it into Dev Kit.

David is learning to make 3D models as the tobacco dryer, wine press, sugar cane crusher and all the other extra items were designed by him with Maya and quixel for the textures. Once we import the model into Maya we had to also import the raft, this is so we can copy the ship model to the raft's animation as we believe that was the easiest method at the time.

Once we imported the mesh into the Dev kit we used the raft skeletal mesh as a reference for the ship. After that it was a simple process of duplicating the raft files but changing the skeletal mesh used and then renaming files. We had a little trouble at first due to ships size but we were able to solve it.

That’s awesome! Hopefully it’ll inspire some other modders as to how they could go about implementing something like this. As for the total conversion itself, how are you guys planning to do the balance -- are the boats purely for travel? Or will you have different types, some for travel, some for transportation, naval warfare and then with the aquatic creatures too, will your ships ever be strong enough to take down a Mosasaurus for example?

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=553458724

salcarr & DavidBC: The ships now can be used for warfare if you add cannons to it, however we may decide to design weapons already on the ship. We are also planning to add the option for taking Dino's on the ship as well.

We may decide to design ships for transportation where players can add items to a smaller ship and have it transported to an island of selection, so players can ship items to other players.
As far as the sea creatures we do want to at some point allow ships to be able to take them down such as either a weapon on the ship. We want to give players options in the game so more boats with different features is what we plan

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=553458670

That sounds pretty damn exciting! Going head to head with a Mosasaurus on a boat - definitely something that’s cool to see! It seems like you guys know where you’re going with this project and have your head wrapped around a few things already, are there any tips or tricks you’d share with other modders based on your experiences thus far?

salcarr & DavidBC: So for the people who want to start to do mod, if you want to do
big project like this one you need to make a team.

Teamwork is very important in project like this one, and constant communication is very important too!

There is also many useful tools to manage your project, like github, slack, trello. Always make sure you reference every item needed if you plan to make an object similar to one in the game. This can be done by using reference viewer on the original items, it's easy to overlook something in the Dev kit.

In addition make sure all items you use are in your mod folder, don't assume because the asset is in the game that your mod will work. Have fun and have patience as things can get frustrating but in the end the outcome is rewarding.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=553458760

Thanks for the tips guys! Is there anything you’d like to wrap up with?

We would like to thank everyone for their support in our work as well as for voting on us. We hope everyone continues to enjoy our work as we continue to make it bigger and better. Leave comments, we are always reading them and responding as much as we can, and suggestions as we think some of the people's ideas are amazing. Don't forget to vote and check out our other sites. We have a patreon for those that would like to help support our work even more and soon we will have a paypal account as well. Look for our future work :)

Grats to those who won! Me myself honestly after entering twice and honestly even though that isn't the aim feeling my builds aren't good enough I gave up on the thought of entering this and having the chance! I also feel no offense to those who win you do great bases but that its always the same people that win so why bother trying!

I am not complaining I have just noticed lately entries for this are getting less and less! I wanted to enter and hopefully win to get the money to help pay back some bills I still owe money on since I am struggling right now. But honestly now I just can't be bothered and have cut back on time I am spending in game as well in preference of actually trying to get my creative skills recognised in real life! As I was spending all day every day trying to achieve this goal and honestly I was getting nowhere with achievements in real life!

I really am happy to all those who won and I wish I felt like I could enter but after two entries (and yes they weren't the best builds) I just decided why bother anymore! Although it would have helped with paying off some bills I have instead decided I can't rely on the internet and am trying to even though I was trying to get a job in real life previously to this (not much luck these days) and realised I just have to try stuff in real life and can't keep spending hours in game trying to achieve and even stand a chance in this! Honestly i am so happy for others that do win these. I just had to share this as I have noticed as time goes there is less entries being entered in this so just I guess wanted to say something from what I have experienced and why I now can't be bothered with it though I really do want to be a part of it!

Goodluck to anyone else entering in the future! Honestly me mysel I may or may not enter since I got sick of cheating building parts in in single player to stand a chance and hence I just don't want to cheat anymore so probably will never enter this again which is sad as I would love to! But I just have to focus on real life from now on! And its not just ark taking a backseat but all my other games too!

Thanks for listening I really love ark and love how you have this comp. Not complaining as you run it how you see fit and its nice for players to be able to enter your comps! I wish them the best. Guess I just needed to say how I was feeling no offense intended to anyone involved in this or the devs and I know this may get some bad responses as is the general reaction any time you express an opinion about something (or most things) On these forums! But I just had to say something

Thanks for listening

About alienware modding contest:

It's a shame that so much money winner has between 100 and 200 votes ... A waste of competition ... If they had announced something like "features mod winner will be included in the game" would have thousands and thousands of participants/votes. ...

Nice Crunch! Will fanmade written dossiers ever be accepted into the Crunchs as well? There's quite a few people (like me) who lack artistic talent yet have great ideas.
