anyways... your case sounds like a typical clipping situation.
that happens when one station touches the geometry of an other station, in this situation the station with the lowest shields will always get destroyed.
trying to drag the station with a tractor beam will speed this process and eventually both touching stations will get destroyed.
sorry that i cant help further but i hope this informations help to prevent those situations in the future.
Also when placing the new station, select an existing one and hit numpad 5 to fully aling the new station to the existing one then move the new station in one direction untill geometry does not touch. Perfect placement made easy. :-)

But I'm not saying this was the cause, but stations dont just blow up for no reason.
