What's your early-game strategy?

What do you find yourself doing the first 10-20 turns? What do you do differently when playing different nations?

as a nation like persia i try to get normal infantry and stock up on that ASAP

try not to fight. just tech and improvement

I like building up industry/railroads and destabilizing any potential rivals. The big thing is trying to deal with a sufficent economic/resource base to fight a major power, which is difficult when you are playing with a country like Italy, which doesn't have the large resource supplies to sustain many industries.

Depends on the country, usually if it is a major power like USA I'll beef up the economy and tech also purduce and sell loads of weapons!!!

I usually play small nations or just poor nations. Spain, Sweden, Persia, Ottomans, Netherlands, Jabal Shammar, some others. My strategy is to usually start construction on some infastructure build up some factories if possibly to get a postive economy. Work on trade to get everything I need coal metals etc. Start construction barracks and then recruitment centers and then start working on an Army. and of course Research.

1) Make sure all my territories have roads.
2) Build open-field farms for rest of my territories.
3) Make sure I have Infantry I and Calvary I being recruited.
4) Focus on Shipping Capacity, Food, and Gold to maintain positive.
5) Tech and build factories for the other resources.
6) Trade if you have to to prevent any resource reaching 0.

Favorite nations are Sweden, Italy, Ottomans, and Russia. Do this the same way with different nations. Only thing I do differently is what tech to choose and how I want to move in tech. If it's a small nation with little tech, get the basics that bigger nations start with. With Italy, i tend to research more towards the Military technology. If I'm Russia, or a nation with oil, I research more towards the economics; BUT making sure I don't fall behind in military tech.
