Was ported to both Mac and Linux - neither GOG, nor Steam offers these versions.
the Linux Version was ported by Loki. This Company is no more. Maybe now a long time ago nobody knows were the Linux files are.

Well, Linux versions can certainly be found on the internet, although original source code may indeed be lost. But the thing is - we've seen a few games that are essentially DRM-Free, because source code was lost somewhere - System Shock 2 is such game... Valve didn't seem to have a problem with such version being on Steam.

The other thing is - even if - why not make a package with a wrapper? It's not 1999 after all and PCs are now so fast, that loosing a lot power due to using Wine or something like isn't a problem either. Again - System Shock 2 Linux port is just that - just SS2 packed with Wine....

But then - I'd say, Interplay just doesn't care that much. There are Linux versions of Dosbox after all and yet - the only package for Descent and Descent 2 is Windows one.
I do know that the Mac version was released way back when, before the Mac OS X transition. There was a promise of a Carbon port, but that never came.

I, myself, would like to see more 64-bit OS X games, as Apple is aggresively pushing that technology.
They did release the source code for Descent 3 long ago, surprised to see there seem to be no multiplatform source ports of it, like there were for Descent 1 and 2. I never really got into Descent 3 as much as the first two, so I hadn't even checked until now. Are there any source ports I am missing?

I know that Descent 1 and 2 have had their source code released, but I'm not seeing anything for Descent 3 other than an SDK.
Oh, I thought the Descent 3 source code was released in the early 00's, but I guess it may just have been the SDK I was thinking of.
Only Descent 1 and Descent 2 had their source code released, from these a couple of branches are maintained, but the license under which the source code was released forbids commercial use. None of their offspring can ever be sold on GOG or Steam.
+1 linux support !
it would make sense for steam to roll out the linux version considering the limited amount of games already on linux and steamOS

Not quite true. Interplay has alowed the development firm Olde skuul free reign on updating Descent 1, 2, 3, and freespace 1 on steam. They are allowed to modify D1 and 2's source code, and I found someone with the d3 source laying around (called the fusion engine). So that is why d3 is on steam. Right now all 3 descent installs are place holders. Basically all the same installs from GOG. They will be replaced with updated versions soon. They were just waiting off on Descent 3 untill they got a hold of the source (which they do now). The Woman heading the updates of these games is one of Interplay's 1st founders, Rebecca heineman. So I believe it is in good hands.

Cool, I hope they don't change it up too much, I preferred DXX Rebirth over D2X XL because it stays true to the original experience while adding better support for modern hardware and being a bit more convenient to set up, and I think they should do something similar to that with these.
The linux patch 1.4 is not up to date with the windows 1.4 version and will kick you from servers with custom netgames like Instareap.

Maybe a blessing in disguise, instareap destroys brain cells :)

As the developer, the Mac and Linux versions are in the pipeline.
