FortressCraft Evolved

FortressCraft Evolved

Oculus Rift
Is now available. It's a snapshot of the 1.8e build, with a number of alterations to make it (just about) playable on an Oculus. I would have done more, but I'm feeling a bit queasy...

I've gone with a primarily mouse-driven movement; your OVR doesn't alter your forward vector, only your look vector. This allows you look around your HUD, as well as allowing you to look at ARTHER. Oculus Users will rapidly fall in love with the diagetic hud that is ARTHER, I hope.

The main menu doesn't have any VR support yet. Survival mode is just about playable, as long as you've memorised all the keys; the resolution of the gen1 headset is simply too low to have anything readable, unless it's the size of My First Hud!

Mouse cursor support is rather confusing as well; I will need to think long and hard about how to tackle that, as I can't really use the hardware cursor, but instead need to move a virtual cursor around in HUD space.

There's also issue with particles; Unity never expected users to tilt their heads, so particles are aligned and don't rotate correctly. This is most apparent on the deep cold fog.

There's issues with clearing between eyes if your PC can't manage the target 60fps; I recommend Fast detail setting unless your PC is a monster.

If you read all that and STILL want in, then simply opt into the Oculus beta, and then navigate to your steam folder (right click, properly, local files) and run FC_64_Oculus.exe. It's 32 bit, despite the stupid name.

Feedback more than welcome. And if you put it in Survival mode and go exploring caves... just wow.

I've now received by DK2 and have spent the entire day trying to get it work. Watch this space (Or @fortress_Craft on twitter) for more information!

Great news! Really looking forward to finally playing this game. I'm just waiting for my DK2 and Fortresscraft to support it. :)

Can't wait!

DK2 curently has issues with deferred rendering (which we use extensively), so I have to wait for the next Oculus SDK upgrade, I'm afraid.

Yea, I've read about that. Totally understandable that you'd want to wait for that. They'll surely fix it. :)

Well, this is certainly a clearer picture of what's happening with the Rift than I previously knew. I stand corrected, Rift support is actually coming.

Good to know, and I'm actually looking forward to it.

Sorry for all the grief, Dj.

I can't wait to try it with the DK2 as well. I've been playing Star Conflict with it and it has been, by far, the best Rift experience I've had until now. From launching the game for the first time, configuring for the Rift, ease of use in the menus, and the game experience itself. It meshes so naturally with the mode of play and I can't wait to see it in use if FC.

I could understand the issues with framerate and such being a real problem. With the reports, and my own experience, with the framerate issues with the latest beta I could see the Rift throwing a big wrench into the mix. Even with the low persistence a little studder here and there can really sicken the experience.

Steveman, have you tried Elite Dangerous on the Rift? If so, how does it compare to Star Conflict?

I've been playing Elite with the Rift, and it's quite amazing, but I've kinda just looked at Star Conflict as a F2P game that wasn't worth my time.

If you think it's actually a great Rift experience, perhaps I need to give it a shot.

I'm not paying for Elite Dangerous yet. When the price is reasonable I'll consider it.

Fair enough.

I play Elite: Dangerous ONLY in the Rift (DK2)! It really is the only way to play it ;)
