A tentative recommendation, and only because the production design is so pinpoint accurate and oozing with verisimilitude. A Power Rangers-esque tactics game is such a novel idea that I can scarcely believe there aren't more of them.

That said, though, I think the game falls short mechanically. There are mechanics that are absolutely unimportant and worthless to spend any time focusing on (audience, fans), because even on the highest difficulties and at the worst personal play performances, I never had to pay attention to them. There are character abilities that are worthless. There are whole characters who are worthless. One thing I did enjoy about it: I think this game benefits from playing at higher-than-normal difficulties, because that does require you to pay a little bit more attention to the synergies between the team members you pick.

I also intensely dislike the weird earnestness of its writing and story. It's a bit too...millennial. A bit too "the power of friendship will set us free." You would probably be right if you made the argument that its writing is aping its inspiration (it being a kid's show after all), but that doesn't mean you have to do that. The thing this argument misses is that these shows all have actors performing the dialogue. Chroma Squad has no voice acting, and must rely only on its writing, and its writing is sh*t.
