Clearly a harkening back to the days of top-down arcade shooters, while Shadowgrounds gets the shooting and enemies right enough, it fails almost everywhere else.
An extremely underwhelming story paired with wooden voice acting leads the charge, but thankfully they're little more than a vehicle for the action. This should, in theory, make the action worth your while, and in a sense, it is, with a solid assortment of weapons and upgrades to reward you for the hordes of enemies you power through.
The environments, however, wear on you quite quickly, with the same grays and browns making up every copy-pasted hallway across all 11 levels. The stages aren't something you can quickly blitz through, either, and even though I was avoiding enemies at every chance near the end of the game, it still felt as though it dragged on far too long. The music too was mediocre to the point of irritating, and I eventually shut it off in favor of my own more atmospheric tracks.
Though it's far from the worst game that I've ever played, there's little here that makes it worth your time.
