Daikatana patch 1.3, fixes loading screen ticks, adds HD resolutions, corrects bot AI nodes, etc.
Install Daikatana patch 1.3 and come to play some multiplayer. Please?

https://bitbucket.org/DGibson/daikatana-1.3/wiki/Home

Daikatana community has produced a patch that updates Daikatana with new features and fixes numerous bugs from the game. With 1.3 you can get HD resolutions (I think up to 4k) and other stuff.

Features:
  • Corrects issues regarding the V-Sync
  • Removes the "tick" sound from loading screens
  • Updated render
  • Adds support for widescreen resolutions of 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratio
  • Adds support for custom resolutions
  • Adds support for additional mouse buttons
  • Adds glowing textures
  • Adds 32-bit textures
  • Updates maps regarding certain map bugs
  • Gamespy's master server has been switches to QTracker's master server
  • Corrects AI path and nodes to a great extent
  • Companion bots have more life and don't die so easily, and on easy difficulty setting these sidekicks are immortal
  • AND MORE! Refer to the README.txt inside the package

Remember to adjust the brightness and gamma of the game. Patch also fixes the multiplayer master server which went broken after Gamespy pulled the plug from all their game servers recently.

Steam's version of the Daikatana has already been updated to 1.2 which is the last official patch Ion Storm released for the game.

Updating the Daikatana to version 1.3

WARNING: Save games made in 1.2 are NOT compatible with 1.3. If you're deep into the game the and you want the community patch 1.3 you need to use "map" command to jump where you were and then use cheats to give yourself some weapons and ammunition. Alternative is to restart the whole single-player campaign.

Download:

DK_EXE_022017_FULL (Windows pre-Beta version from 2017-02-20 FULL PACKAGE):
http://dk.toastednet.org/DK13/DK_EXE_022017_FULL.EXE

It's a self-extracting installer. After you've downloaded the package you install it to Daikatana's folder. If you have Steam installed to it's default path Daikatana's folder is located in:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Daikatana\

(or if you're running 64-bit Windows):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Daikatana\

If it asks if you would like to overwrite any files, do so and overwrite the files. End result is that when Daikatana starts you can see in the right bottom corner of the red area in main menu "1.3" instead of "1.2". You're also able to access for example the HD resolutions from the Video menu.

If you start playing multiplayer with Daikatana community, you're also going to need:

dkcustom.rar (Pak9)[dk.toastednet.org]

You extract that package into:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Daikatana\data\

I don't know if I am allowed to mirror these files like this but unless the developers of the project come up and tell me that I should not do this then I guess it's OK.

Reporting issues with the patch

This is important! If you guys encounter bugs and stuff go report them:

EDIT: Links updated to a newer version of the 1.3 beta patch. If you upgrade from old version make sure that you don't have these files in your maps-folder by deleting them: http://daikatananews.net/dk13/maps_not.png

EDIT (20.02.17): I've updated the links and made small changes to wording. Patch 1.3 has an installer nowadays which makes it easier to download and install these updates.

Yep. Not to mention, it fixes the loading screen ticks, for the people who though it was annoying, by removing it entirely.

I haven't played the game through in its entirely yet with the 1.3 under the hood, and I can mostly just comment on E1 changes, but I can say that most of the level changes they've made really do improve the way AI companions work in various situations. Bots have less issues at picking stuff up and they generally cooperate with you more often now. I like how there is now more space in some parts of the levels (which effectively prevents bots getting stuck) and some enemies have been repositioned in certain rooms.

The intent there is a good one. These certain rooms are really small, pack a loads of enemies, and you're just expected to e.g. shoot one C4 pack to the wall from an air-duct without getting hit and then blow it up without dying yourself. The Patch 1.3 removes these portions from the game.

Although I didn't like it that now some rooms which were difficult but fair fights are now much easier to win. And how some harder rooms that are supposed to have certain amount of enemies are now empty with the said enemies being in the next (previously easier) room often doubling the amount of opponents in the room making it a real gib festival. (Which is just silly much fun if you have Sidewinder at your disposal. :B1: )

Just as a warning that at some points the 1.3 partially breaks the Mikiko's bot AI (hence it's a beta) like in the E1 "the Vault" were the (always so damn broken and annoying) Mikiko just starts again to get stuck in ladders (just like in 1.0) she would otherwise in version 1.2 have no issues at all getting through. Superfly seems to be non-affected by this. (I have the Daikatana retail 1.0 and I've played it through. You can pity me now if you want.)

It was nice to notice that the patch 1.3 introduces some the level geometry back into the game which was removed in 1.1 or 1.2 to avoid bot AI issues. For example the roadblock pole at E1 "the Crematorium" parking lot which you can lift up and down from a computer terminal is back again. Superfly now properly ducks underneath it without issues.

I can see these guys making the 1.3 have made a huge effort with fixing things. The E1 has always been full of issues from the art decisions to level design and how the bots work, and how the E1 level puzzles are full load of BS at times. And I just personally don't think any amount of patching is going to fix the E1. It's absolutely the worst episode from any perspective.

I played the E2 with 1.3 installed. The only issues I had where again with Mikiko (big, f*king, surprise). The patch 1.3 doesn't fix the issues Mikiko has with jumping out the water fountains in Greece. But at least there are now only two of them (most veteran players know those spots by now, I can make a Daikatana walkthrough guide for these things if you guys want). Those spots are easy to fix with the later iterations of the patch 1.3 by simple level editing like they had done in E1. I just need to report back to them if I can contact the guys.

On a positive side like with E1, Mikiko now actually follows you closer and actually, you know, shoots stuff and is able to assist you. Not much better than in official 1.2 patch but I felt it worked little better (but it might be just me). Mikiko takes out the small spiders and other stuff for you. (The game is immediately less annoying to play)

Also the Mikiko had less issues with doors overall, but there where two doors that in 1.2 didn't have any issues when I last time played Daikatana but with 1.3, maybe half of the cases when she tries to open them herself, have now some minor issues that require player's attention. I think it's got something to do with her waypoint not being exactly in the middle of the doorway or something.

Also the issue where Mikiko might actually fall through the map in one very spesific part of the E2 has not been fixed in 1.3 and if I do the guide I have to make it a top priority note in the guide about E2. (The issue is that if you run down the hill bunny hopping all the way as fast as you can, Mikiko also speeds up and tries to follow you but her waypoint at certain specific bridge is in a such angle that if she comes down too fast she will falls through the bridge from an weird angle and ends up a place where she is stuck forever and you need to load game from a previous save file.)

And unlike in 1.2, Mikiko didn't have any issues with the ladders in 1.3 during the E2. Which is a huge positive point. And she also now actually can pick up most of the items you tell her to pick up instead of whining "I'm not going to need that" when she's on a verge of death and you tell her to pick up a health potion.

As a final note, in 1.3 the companion bots picking up stuff actually works so well that a rare event in 1.2, bots picking up automatically the stuff they need, actually works in 1.3 and if they really really need for example ammunition, they're likely to pick them up automatically when they need the stuff and player doesn't need to spesifically order them to do so. This has been true so far for E1, E2 and the portions of E3 I've played.

I only remembered this issue because in 1.3 and in E3 there is this one corner portion of a certain map where companion bots actually refused to pick up body armor despite of them not having one. And then I was like "oh it's this s*it again" and then I was like "oh damn, I didn't encounter this issue until now, wow, stuff actually works." ;-D

Overall there are no large changes in the companion bot AI but the small things are noticeable. Of course I could also be imagining some of this stuff with 1.3 being just a placebo (and it works in 1.2 also). But I'm just making notes here on stuff I feel is noteworthy to some extent.

I tried to download it yesterday and it worked fine. But if you have issues with the download link they've provided I can upload the beta patch to cloud storage drive and link it here for you and others.

I didn't link directly to the file as it might change when they update the patch, it's still in beta and they'll probably make large changes to it. It's also important to read all the stuff they provided at the wiki since patch 1.3 breaks save game compatibility just like with any Quake 2 engine based game. (It's an Q2 engine issue)

Have you been able to download the beta patch 1.3 by now?

Spoilers: E4 sucks.

IMHO E4... E4 is a repeat of the E1 but without the actual meaning to anything you do. In E1 you help to rescue Mikiko, E2 you help gods of Olympus, In E3 you help kingdom to recover from the verge of collapse. In E4 I guess you're supposed to help the state to prevent crime organization from doing something, I guess...

The best way to understand what I mean is the totally meaningless fight in Mishima's mansion to reach the attic. And the stuff characters just say and do after they've done so pissed me off first time I played it. Level design is ok but overall it just feels like it was supposed to be a much longer episode and they had to cut out some of the planned content and story from it. It's also less polished than the E1. 6/10 (On scale 4-10)

I completed the E3 and E4. E3 had almost no changes at all fairly minor things. E4 had probably none. At least I am unable to tell the difference if there were some.

I was able to complete both episodes without any major issues. The only actual major issue which I always have is that the Mikiko fails hard at E4. Here's a screenshot(s):

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=277325941
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=277325973

Mikiko's waypoints tell Mikiko to just walk the straight and fall from the edge. This is not an actual AI bug in my opinion but a failure in mapping. The lift/cart is supposed to come to the edge and make a connection with the edge. Then Mikiko comes and falls into the cart. And it's been like this since the 1.0 and has never been fixed. It makes it difficult to trick Mikiko to make a jump to the cart that there's an actual instruction to fall down from the edge.

You know what's the best part about that? You're supposed to make her jump twice. At least on the second time that's what's supposed to happen in anycase (after power has been cut from the lift's shaft) and it doesn't matter by that point anymore. But it cuts the flow of the game for a second.

does the patch also fix the load times?
i have this on a SSD and i think the load times are insane.

I don't have an SSD so I'm unable to answer to your question. Load times have never been an issue for me and the game just loads stuff up even in 1.2 instantly.

It's true however that if you have V-Sync (for example if your display drivers force v-sync to be active) on and you're running the 1.2 the game will wait for each of the "tick" sounds to play out after loading a file before moving to load another file. It makes the game go "tick tick tick"and it seems like the loading time is very very long.

Patch 1.3 fixes this behaviour by removing the "tick" sound entirely. But just in case you should play Daikatana without V-Sync enabled.

I downloeaded the patch to 1.2 (Because the website said I needed to be at 1.2 before the 1.3 hop) and I go to patch it and it gives me an error that the game isn't installed, did anyone else encounter this? If so, how do you work around it?

Steam version is already patched to 1.2. If you have Daikatana from Steam then you don't need to install 1.2. You see the version in the main menu in right bottom corner of the middle red area next to the menu switches.

1.2 complains that the game isn't installed because its installer is looking Windows registry keys the CD retail version of the game adds to registry.

You download the package. You extract the package on top of Steam's Daikatana folder. It's pretty simple. If you need more help, I'm in Daikatana's Steam chat room.
