I kind of wish they kept a record of the number of kill assists, but that could be a burden for the system, as so many players could get assists from just one aircraft.
WT had done a lot already to reward players appropriately for their play. I often see folks (like me) higher at the end of game than others who shot down more planes. I've actually come in first with the most points but with less aircraft kills. I get a lot of assists and I also shoot down ground targets along with aircraft. Too, WT has special awards at the end of a game for those with the most assists and the most ground targets taken out. Also, bombers who take out an enemy base completely destroying it end up at the top at the end of a game, usually. It looks odd as you won't see any ground targets or aircraft taken out (if they spent their whole time to take out the enemy base) - it will be all zeros, except for score!
I don't really think there needs to be a change to the current scoring system - it's so much better than it originally was.
You are approaching it from 'whats in it for me', I think most others are approaching it from 'this is broken and messing up the game'. If you are scoring highly for so little effort, against stationary targets, of course you aren't going to want a change.
You can actually see in game the amount of players who ignore fresh targets and all try to swoop in on a near dead or crashing enemy to take the kill on it, i see it as im flying into the battle all the time...
And yes people ALWAYS try to ram you if they think you are going to shoot them down.
Like other games like this, people always throw team work and fun out the window for their own personal game.
You're right, in a sense. Most others are approaching it in a negative way. And they are the ones who are wanting to see what's in it for them. I'm happy with the system as it is - I'm not looking for more, as you suggest. (It would be nice if you could be accurate with your comments)
I'm not scoring highly for so little effort, either! I typically shoot down 4 to 7 aircraft a game with anywhere from 2 to 10+ ground targets. Usually, when I come in first I may only have 4 aircraft kills but end up on the top with the best score becasue I'm a team player, which means I also have taken out some ground targets and have several more assists than a maverick style player would have. Another player might have 5 aircraft kills but no ground targets taken out, and little or no assists - they will have a lower score than I do with my 4 killed aircraft and 3 or 4 ground targets taken down. Those players, the ones who ONLY go for aircraft kills are not ending up at the top with the best score anymore when other players have almost as many kills and have some ground targets added in with a high assist rate. If you play this game a lot you would know this. Perhaps you are relatively new to WT?
I understand your assersion someone coming along and getting rewarded with a kill when you had been working on downing an aircraft and failed to do so, but it isn't entirely true. Yes, there have been times when I have worked hard to down a plane, usually a B17, and someone comes in while I have to wait for a reload and takes him down and he gets the kill while I get an assist. Usually, however, I've been able to pump a lot of rounds into him but either fail to get any critical damage shots in, or I get the wrong kind of critical damage that has not had the time to cause the aricraft to go down (some critical shots take time to disable an aircraft, such as engine hits that cause an engine to eventually stop working altogether at some point). Most planes can survive critical damage by returning to base and getting repaired (that is if they can land - many times they will have to crash land, where the player who critted him will get a kill but he has a chance to repair if he wishes to remain with the same plane), but when someone else comes a long and crits him again then usually they get that kill. I suspect that certain crtical damage trumps other critical damage, or a second critical shot gets the kill.
On a side note about "stealing" kills. I get very annoyed at players who think someone stole their kill. In a game where teamwork is important there is no stealing kills. Even if teamwork were not important, the palyer who makes the most crtiical shots (or the last crit) gets the kill. Being territorial about enemy aircraft is rather silly and very shallow. No one "owns" an enemy aircraft until they get the kill for it. Having said that, I do try to respect the fact that my teammate is about to get a kill when I see an enemy aircraft on fire and I haven't already engaged it. I won't go after it normally, but there have been times when we just needed to get the kill by any means to protect our base or to free up the teammate so that we can defend ourselves better, or so we can win the game before our enemy does. Usually, it's young kids (or kids mentally but in adult bodies) that think they own an enemy aircraft and that no teammate should help take it out. That's self-centered play and thinking.
You are correct in that a true teammate looks for where s/he can best be of best use in the team effort.
5-6 planes hovering around, deliberately not employing their gunfire, not engaging individual targets, hoping to poach a kill isn't assisting a team. You may as well piss on peoples head and tell them its raining.
Or you could dive from altititude and fire into their cockpit, killing the pilot. That works, as I've done it several times. Or one can fly a Bf 109-G6 or G10 with the two 30mm wing cannons and blow the bomber out of the sky in a matter of seconds with massive fire power! :)
