Holy crap. I wanted to say that it is a good cheap game, but the best way i can describe it is: clunky. This is a complete clunky mess to play, controls are extremely vague, "loose", and unpredictable on keyboard and on my Thrust T80 wheel, tutorial is kinda confusing and just throws you into the open world once you're done, and overall quality screams the era that the game is from. So, let's move to a more precise review:

Graphics:

Not really bad considering the age, ETS1 looks like a ETS2 but with mainly worse lighting, shaders and color pallette in general; reminds me a lot of City Car Driving's graphics. Runs on any radioactive potato with video output at very high framerates, even better than Euro 2. At first, on the initial configuration screen, it's a bit confusing to set the graphics, but just go to advanced settings and select OpenGL for better compatibility and go for max graphics if you have any good graphics card launched in the last 10 years (or even any integrated graphics from the last 5 years).

Audio:

It's a 16 year-old game, what do you expect? Nothing to write home about, sound effects and music don't make you want to commit seppuku, and also don't make you ascend to heaven, since they just are less polished than ETS2's.

Gameplay:

As I said, clunky. Once the game boots up, you're just thrown in the main menu without any guides, then the tutorial for when choosing new game is very vague and kinda useless, it doesn't set you to do any pre-selected basic delivery, you don't have any route to follow on the map, and the game is very dead and uneventful while you're doing deliveries. UI doesn't feature any speed limit signs, digital speedometer, and is very crude.

Controls:

OK. This is the worst and clunkiest part of ETS1 by far. Controller settings are very limited, have no predefinitions for keyboard, gamepad, keyboard + mouse nor steering wheels, and driving ingame is extremely unpredictable, the trucks go all over the place due to slow steering response on keyboard (but keyboards obviously aren't good for driving games overall), and it's arguably even worse for low rotation wheels like the 240° Thrustmaster T80 I have, mostly because the ingame steering angle is locked to 900° and the initial 200° of ingame steering are completely unresponsive. Steering axis' deadzone is very buggy and can sometimes simply ignore the setting you put up for it, and I can't imagine how bad would playing the game be with a force feedback wheel like the G29 or T150 coupled with those problems. Playing with a gamepad would probably be the best alternative, as there isn't much that can go wrong with one, including deadzones and sensitivity.

After this, my final score is:

Audio: 6/10
Gameplay: 3.5/10
Controls: 1/10

Overall: 4/10


Just don't buy this game, really. Isn't worth even with discount, and ETS2 gets its price chopped up by 70% all the time.
Or buy it if you want a clunky old truck game to play with... or you somehow use a prehistoric pc that can only run this.

What can I say? I can't tell you what to do, the money is yours to spend on random crap.
