I felt like playing some old school Quake II after finishing Brutal Doom, but when I open the game goes to a black screen which is followed by
"quake2.exe has stopped working"
Any way to fix this?

Are you trolling? What part of "it doesn't work" don't you understand. OF COURSE we've been running the Steam version. Why do you think the question is being asked in the Steam forums?

Having exactly the same problem. Peh. haven't found a fix yet. Running 64-bit windows 7, article in the news column was, I can confirm, no help at all.

I have no idea whether or not you have managed to get Quake 2 working.

Here some suggestions you could try out:
- Start the game directly from the library (click on library, then on installed, then click on play to start quake 2).
- Start the game directly by locating the quake2.exe file in the steam common files.
- Change the compatibility of the quake2.exe file

I am no expert, but I hope these suggestions help.

This worked for me, even though Compatibility Mode didn't!

It's something to do with default graphics setting. On my good PC I switched to run Nvidia card and that fixed it but my laptop with integrated intel card kept craashing to the same error. I found this:

Quote:
I had to go into the cfg files though to modify it: Steam\SteamApps\common\quake 2\baseq2\config.cfg and modify the line: set gl_driver "opengl" to set gl_driver "software"

The file wasn't there so I added it with driver set to software and it ran in a small window where I could increase screen to 1600 x 1200 res. I am running windows 10 on both.
