A lot of people, myself included, find the aspect of the harshness of death in this game to be a positive factor. It is in fact one of the things that defines the genre.
It makes perfect sense in a game like this. What's the point of looting if you don't lose your items upon death? What's the point in killing other players if you get nothing for your efforts?
1) You retain xp earned and skills purchased using xp
2) You ratain any in-game dollars you pick up (no need to get them back to a safe zone even)
3) You retain anything that you do manage to get back into the safezone vault
In another post I have suggested some ideas of how our items that we loot should work when we get killed and here is in few words:
Lets say if you have 2 (or more) same items, if you die then 1 of that item should stay in your backpack and the rest same items should drop. That way we all can be happy I believe :)
Oh and at least the big backpack should be the same too, if you wearing one big backpack it should be permanent on you and not loosing it on death but if you have a second one inside then you will loose the one that is inside.
