Fallout 3 GOTY Crash when I press new game. HELP!
I'm pretty new on steam, just got an awesome labtop on my birthday (i'm 17), used to play on the xbox 360 but it is becoming dull but loved betesda games and tryed it on the pc. I baught fallout 3 GOTY and I setted the settings to my pc, then when I press new game, within 10 secs, it crashes. I need help resolving this problem. My pc is windows 7 and I know it is not optimized for it, but is there a way to have it work?

If you haven't checked the forums and found this pretty common suggestion for a fix, then I'll inform you of it.
Go to the program files and in your Fallout 3 folder (located somewhere in steamapps/common) find your .ini file (which appears as a notepad document when opened) and then search "bUseThreadedAI=0"
Change the "0" to a "1" and then hit Enter so as to create a new line.
Then type "iNumHWThreads=2"

Now, if this doesn't work, there is a .dll file you might want to download. That, though, you might have to search the forums for as I don't know where it is.
For the moment, though, try this fix.
I hope it works.

[EDIT] Here's a link to a forum page that might be able to explain all this better... plus, it does have the .dll file I mentioned.

Thanks for the help, I hope the first suggestion you said will work. But if not, then I will second one.

Ok, i've done every thing i've done with what you said lord except for the second one. Everytime my Norton sais it contains Trojan, malware, etc. So i'm not going to do that, even if it is fallout 3 i'm not risking my computer. But i have pretty much given up hope, i setted fallout 3 to windows xp compatible mode, still doesnt start, so i'm going to get new vegas, waste of $20 bucks i geuss.

right my bad. it would be more wise to search it in youtube, just to give you are visual tutorial, but ill still type it. ok so you want to press the windows button in your toolbar the one at the bottom of your screen, once up there should be something called a control panel click on that, then, once loadded you will want to click on the big green text that says program, then underneath program and features click turn windows feature on or on, it will then open a box, it might take a while to load. right now there should be folders with boxes that some are tick and some are not you will want to make every box empty.NO TICKS. ALL BOXES EMPTY. then press OK. you might have to restart your laptop/computer, i cant remeber then just go on to fallout and it should work, if you couldnt find something in my guide. just type in "how to turn off windows features" into youtube thats what i did when i had the same problem as you. hope it works it should

Yeah i agree, i havn't tried soviet kings idea cause i'm pretty busy at the moment with new vegas. If it doesn't work for you fallout man, then i suggest getting new vegas. But it doesn't hurt to try finding out how to fix fallout 3. But, then again, bethesda won't do an update on fallout 3 anymore because it's old. Their working on dishonored, skyrim, and possibly fallout 4. So it will be a rare chance bethesda will make an update for fallout 3 for windows 7.

Hello there. You know, I fixed this problem downloading Games for Windows Live :) I used to play FO before I used Steam and it would work with that. I did this when I got the steam version and had the same crushing as you do. Hope this helps!!
