fallout 3 doesn't start on windows 8.1
Someone please help me. I've had this game forever and decided to do a playthrough of it. I just installed it since I got windows 8 and windows 8.1. I tried to start it up and now it won't start!

You click launch the menu comes up and then the game won't start. But I fixed it you had to install GFWL because it doesn't install with the download.

Hmm I never needed that before. Do you have a link?

This is for Windows 8.1 but I just used the guide that's stickied here on discussions.

I have windows 8 and fall out New vegas works fine. I don't know about FO 3 though.

Windows 8.1 here works fine, however I did follow some instructions prior about installing Games for Windows Live. it involved me going to a url at XBOX.com (http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Live/PC/DownloadClient) and downloading the installer, running the installer in compatibility (and as administrator) prior to installing Fallout 3.

Once that was done I did an update, logged into my live account once to make sure it was working.

Then when my Fallout 3 download completed, I started that up, it went through some install bits.

I was expecting to try and debug loads of problems to get it work (according to all the posts on the subject) and well was suprised that it wasn't just running without any hitches but currently no bugs or crashes. (The XBOX 360 version was plagued with them)

Edit: I'd suggest running the game intself (not the launcher) in Vista (sp 3) compatibility mode, otherwise you'll find you can't drop items using a controller.

I found that if you run it in Vista compatiblity once, drop some items and save. Then remove compatiblity from it, the ability to drop items stays.

Just ran Microsoft's Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant and it states that Fallout 3 is not compatible. Just a note.

I got GFWL, it does not solve the problem. Instead of not starting, it crashes damn near instantly upon starting a game. This is ridiculous

Not as ridiculous as ignoring the pinned thread at the top of this discussion area with all the solutions! :)
