I had proprietary drivers from ATI installed that broke everything, so I installed fglrx-updates thru apt-get so there are fglrx drivers...

Linux has a filesystem that is case sensitive, for example, I could not initially run TF2 because it tried to load "[user]/.local/shared/.steam/SteamApps/zeke580." But this is a problem since I logged in with "Zeke580", so the uppercase Z threw it off.
Perhaps your case is similar?

It still allowed for me to go into the application but I cannot see force S3TC texture compression.
