[TF2] Issue: TF2 won't start
When I try to start TF2 it says Preparing to launch... and then a black flash, and nothing.

Hit ctrl + alt + T and type
sudo apt-get install driconf
After that hit the windows key, type in driconf, and run the program. Type in your password and see if the program allows you to choose "force S3TC texture compression". Try and launch tf2, and report back.

When launching DRIConf from terminal:
Driver "fglrx" is not installed or does not support configuration.

I had proprietary drivers from ATI installed that broke everything, so I installed fglrx-updates thru apt-get so there are fglrx drivers...

From DRIconf itself:
Could not detect any configurable direct-rendering capable devices. DRIconf will be started in expert mode.

I don't know what to do from here.

That's interesting, because my card is no longer supported by amd (x2 4550s) and I'm using the open source drivers. Perhaps it is because of your username.

Linux has a filesystem that is case sensitive, for example, I could not initially run TF2 because it tried to load "[user]/.local/shared/.steam/SteamApps/zeke580." But this is a problem since I logged in with "Zeke580", so the uppercase Z threw it off.

Perhaps your case is similar?

My steam username is all lowercase and just letters and numbers so I don't think that's it.

Hm, okay. I will continue to look at those logs, and will post back if I find anything!

If you need anything more from me to help assist you, assist me... Let me know. You can add me on Steam if you want. I appreciate all the help

I've got the same problem as I'm on a boat. I followed your steps with driconf and received an error when trying to run it (installed fine):

could not detect any configurable direct-rendering capable devices

It still allowed for me to go into the application but I cannot see force S3TC texture compression.

Hi, I have the same problem. I'm on ubuntu 12.10 with fglrx-updates package instead of fglrx. I installed the beta fglrx drivers from AMD and tf2 ran OK, slower than windows on my hd 5850.

Woob, if you would like to increase the FPS, try running it in windowed mode on a smaller resolution. This seems to drastically up performance.
