Ingame Controller button icons showing up as words.

I have a generic USB controller thats basically modled after a 360 controller. When I used to play with it, It would show 360 controller icons in game and show up as a xbox controller in the options. It doesnt do that anymore. The game controls the same way, but I miss having the pretty button icons instead of just (Button 1) or whatever. How do? Am I mentally handicaped?
