hotrod = pointless waste of an item

what is the point of the hotrod pickup? the little speed boost it gives in no way justifies the massive loss of speed when it ends. if u pickup one on round 5 of a vs race you've lost, because no matter how you use it you will ALWAYS lose because it slows to a crawl when it blows up.

anyone else agree? why not give us the ability to drop an item if we dont want it? :/

From what I can see, it seems you're not using it correctly.

The reason you're slowing down when it blows up is because you're letting it overheat, you're not supposed to let it do that. Watch the dial on the hotrod. When it enters the red area on the dial, press the item key/button. It'll set off a firey shockwave and you won't slow down. The shockwave can also hit opponents around you too.

You're supposed to release an explosion before it blows up by tapping the item use button again. With that explosion you can hit your surroundings.

Basically what xenn said, you're using it wrong. I guess after knowing this you'll like the item

It's situational. It's a really good item to have early in the race, when everyone is grouped together, but it's almost worthless when there's no one around you.

Well, at least it's better than Mario Kart Wii's Thunder Cloud, except for the fact that you can't TC glitch with the Hot Rod...

Say that to people that get it from the Bonus Chance slot machine! Getting over five racers at once with it is a sight to behold.

The amount of impact it has on the race and your position apart from the first bend chaos (where anything really goes) is insignificant compared to a blowfish at choke point, a well placed ice shot barrage (most devastating offensive weapon in game if used correctly) and drones/dronespam if you're not 2nd.
Also count the interactions with existing boosts; if you have a decent boost going like level 4+, it's going to more likely slow you down in the long run than anything due to how boost stacking mechanics work.

Hotrod is amazing if you can keep up with your opponents while using it, and not get hit meanwhile. It also breaks projectiles, such as remote controller cars.

"even more so than blowfish"? Blowfish is a great item, I'm going to assume you never saw two or three consecutive boost 'pads' for planes with blowfishes in the middle. Ruins your race.

Also worth mentioning that due to the hotrod's nature of pushing people that it hits away, it is quite handy for knocking people off stages that don't have barriers. I've often prematurely let my hotrod go just to do that.

normally when i get hotrod as soon as i get near someone i let it go since it is useless most of the time its only good to hit someone with it otherwise i acutally want ice or even a puffer fish and if i'm first i want the glove
