They Bleed Pixels
There needs to be an option to remove the in-game "parchment frame" from the HUD.
That stylish frame takes up valuable space in-game. That space could be useful to the player to spot spikes and enemies. It breaks immersion for me because I find it covers up useful information in the levels. In a game that is very challenging, I find there is an extra challenge when this frame blocks part of the stage.

They designed the levels with the HUD in mind. If the spikes are hidden from the HUD it's intentional. There are ways to scout what's below you before committing to a jump that can kill you.
Have you tried using the camera? ... Take a look under Options in Controls.

If you have and its still no help - sorry :(
you can move the camera around and i never found it to be a hinderence and i like the aspect of it being like a written tale shown in the book of claws or some scary story i kinda like it :D
Yeah, I know about the camera and I don't find it helps. Controlling a camera in a 2D game creates too much friction durin gameplay I find. It would be cool to have an option for HUD transparency.
I agree with the OP, the HUD around the edge of the screen sucks. There should be an option to remove it or at least control how transparent it is.
