EDIT: at least on linux, on enemy within AND unknown, the file is nowhere to be seen.

Same to you.
I wanted to chime in as well - I bought this game at launch, and had given up on playing it since my laptop was only capable of producing about 15fps on all low settings. I manually added the application to the Nvidia panel like you suggested, and I'm getting a solid 40fps on medium now. You're my freakin' hero! I almost bought the game for PS3 just to have a chance at playing it before jumping on to Xcom 2 on console.
tl;dr - you da real MVP.
lesson learned: Dont buy radeon.
