1 is survival horror.
2 is something between action and horror.

1. But 2 definitely has it's moments of a more panic nature while 1 has you on the edge of your seat quite a bit.

1 is more immersive in scares, it really tries to throw things at you are not prepared for, and generally does a better job in music, jump scares and atmostphere. I personally have played the game at least 6 times, i still jump at things i know are going to happen ever since i played it for the first time in 2008. If that says anything definetly Dead Space 1 is the "scariest" of the franchise.
