If you are only playing the game for the end-game story then yes, you don't even need to play 2 to get the general story in 3. (Although Mass Effect 2, as you have discovered, was quite enjoyable) However, even if the big story is not revealed much in the first game, I still would recommend my friends to play it for the sheer reason of few characters such as Wrex that will only have cameos and what not in the later episodes of triology, and he is a companion in the first one. If you care about the companions and their stories, personalities etc, I would still advice you to bite to bullet and play the first game with the M.E.U.I.T.B (the graphic overhaul).
