Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients

Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients

Iberia v0.7 Campaign pack add-on
Mod difficulty
This is INSANE. I was swarmed by 26 brigades, many of them veterans, when invading the eastern Baeticus valley on just the 2nd mission. A good deal of them were just skirmisher spam. This is not fun. The mod is well done but TWENTY SIX BRIGADES against 3 is too much especially with the massive gold ticker for the Rome tribute.

Ok I figured out that it was a glitch that somehow caused the first general to respawn with the second. It never repeated and now I finished the campaign. This mod is DLC quality and is FANTASTIC. The level of research and design is incredible and I learned things even after having read several books on the Punic Wars and Hannibal.

Do you have a Patreon? I'd love to see this fleshed out into the 2nd Punic War and maybe a prequel First Punic War/Mercenary War.

Thanks for the kind words!

Do you have any information that could help me debug the glitch? You're saying that Istolacius somehow respawned with Indortes?

My plan is to release an expansion for the Latium mod first, and then work on a campaign for the Iberian theater of the 2nd Punic War.

A First Punic War/Mercenary War campaign would be very interesting I agree. I've also thought about making a separate campaign about the Italian/North African theater of the 2nd Punic War as well.

Unfortunately the vanilla map is encrypted and not editable. So while I can create campaigns on the vanilla map, I can't actually edit or expand it.
But for a First Punic War campaign you'd definitely need to include Northern Africa, and Sardinia as well for the Mercenary War.
So I would be forced to create a new map from scratch and re-create Sicily in its entirety in a new map together with Sardinia and Tunisia.

Map editing is probably the most time-consuming part of the process and having to create Sicily again when it already exists in Vanilla is a bit annoying.
The idea has been in the back of my mind, but if I'll get around to it it will likely not be any time soon.

I don't have a Patreon but thank you for your interest!

Yes it appeared that Istolacius spawned across the river from Qarthammon, but I don’t have the save. I have a screenshot showing the 26 units though. Never happened again. It was strange.

Have you reached out to the developer on the map limitations? Your mod is DLC quality and it would be great if the dev released some of the limits for you. Honestly, the developer may want to put Sardinia, Illyria, and North Africa in themselves, This game is uniquely suited to simulate the Punic wars but you need all of those regions to do it.. You could have a campaign from the Roman POV and the Carthaginian.

I guess the Iberian campaign would follow the Scipios? Would you need to expand to Southern Gaul to reflect the Massalalian support?

Another idea I had would be an Agathokles campaign in Cyrenaica, Sicily, and Carthage - but I’m sure you have enough ideas and work to do on your own. Your research is fantastic by the way.

Strange indeed, if you could share the screenshot I would appreciate it.

The developers have in general been really helpful with opening up the game for modding, but I'm guessing they're keeping the vanilla map a bit closer to the chest so a modder won't accidentally interfere with their expansion plans, or some other business or maybe even legal reasons. I can't really comment much on it.

I've yet to iron out the details on the Punic War campaign but yes it will focus on the Scipios. I'm hoping to also breathe life somehow into the Carthaginian side of things and at times make the player understand their perspective and strategic considerations, though I'm not sure how yet.

I might indeed include a minor to medium map expansion if it proves necessary. That will become apparent once I've ironed out the details of how the campaign, so I don't really know yet.

Your Agathokles idea is interesting as well, but, yes, too many ideas and too little time at the moment I'm afraid.

Thanks again for the kind words! :)

Any luck on a Punic Wars mod? Not to nag, but yours was more fun than TW Rome 2 and Imperator.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I have recently begun research and planning for a campaign detailing the Iberian theatre of the Second Punic War, which will be added in the next version later this year.

you are awesome! Will the map extend to Massilia? I always wonder why the Barcids never neutralized them!
Fristi61  [developer] Aug 17, 2020 @ 9:36am
I've thought about that but the way the current heightmap is set up makes it impossible for me to append extra elevation data. Also the Pyrenees make for a logical-feeling map boundary, moreso than a random river in southern France would.

The upcoming Punic War campaign does mention Massilia as a foreign entity and goes a little bit towards explaining why the Barcids never conquered them.

The short of it is that they were a very important ally of Rome in the western Mediterranean. When the 2nd Punic War did break out, Hannibal's plan was to catch the Romans off guard by invading Italy from the North before the Romans had a chance to invade Africa.
This required speed and the element of surprise, both of which would have been lost if Hannibal decided to engage Massilia in a years-long siege.

Random question: how can I assign the starting invading army home cities? Are all the invader spawned units just supposed to die off?
Fristi61  [developer] Aug 17, 2020 @ 10:01am
IIRC you should be able to assign them home cities, but the home city needs to match the native faction of the unit. Which is difficult, since you don't start with any native cities on the map.
TheDudeAbides Aug 17, 2020 @ 10:13am
Even the one you found? I was able to make the Balearic Slingers and numidian cavalry home at my founded city, but not my elephants or javelineers.

Interesting, I will get back to you on that
TheDudeAbides Aug 18, 2020 @ 4:04pm
It had to do with building availability except archers. There's no native archer building and you can't home assign mercs.

well, I agreed its too difficult, enemy floods from all directions, itc very hard to hold the ground
TheDudeAbides Jan 3, 2023 @ 11:04am
You have to focus on the objectives - you can rout the entire enemy army by doing that and take a TON of slaves
