So when you capture certain minor faction leaders, you get the option to free them in exchange for learning the secrets of their equipment. That only applies to your Custom Knighthood Order(CKO) units. It allows you to equip them with this gear and the pieces will show up in the inventory list when purchasing new armor/weapons for your CKO.

Major faction leaders each have a unique weapon they can offer you in exchange for their release ONLY if their faction is down below 6 walled feifs(castles/cities). I'm guessing this is what you saw. Also, the two noldor lords have weapons as well if you capture them.
