Howard Philips Lovecraft was an American short-story horror writer at the turn of the 20th century. His style of writing was coined 'cosmic horror' due to its conception of showing the smallness and insignificance of humanity in the grand schemes of the daunting cosmos. He created countless monsters and gods that other authors weaved into their stories. In his tales, the arc tends to follow a discovery of some forbidden object or lore following to the protagonists experiencing a traumatic encounter with some kind of monster beyond comprehension. If you're interested in Lovecraft, I highly recommend checking out his works in audiobook formart, for free, on youtube.

There is a ton of info on the internet if you want to delve further. Delving further into forbidden knowledge is always a good idea!
