Barb and I mostly work on this mod for fun based on what we'd like for the game, and we just plain aren't interested in the original avians. In addition, Barb has a lot of art stuff to do inbetween working on this, and I have games and other mods I work on, so when we get together to work on a new update, we simply don't want to spend our time patching and converting everything for something we're not interested in when we can be spending the time working on new things we want to add to the mod.
Now, if any of you wanna do it, that's another story. I've talked to Barb and we have no problem with people making optional patches for the mod and releasing them so long as they're specified to be addons for the mod (if they're using any of our assets, anyways) and only include the necessarry files for the patch (there was a previous Avian "patch" that got nixed because it was just a complete reuplaod of the mod except with the avians reverted, which obviously isn't cool). However, you'll be on your own as far as maintaining it and keeping it compatible with the latest Starbound versions and Cutebound releases and the like.
I think that's a pretty fair way to do things. We don't wanna stifle people making additions and stuff they wanna make to enhance their personal experiences with the mod (and the experience of others who may want the same), but we don't wanna slog down our development by doing things we don't care to do. So as long as you're not repacking the entire mod, do what you want as far as addons/patches/etc go.
