Answer - The normal checklist for getting Steam downloads to work is:
0) As of the last few months, the EU4's Steam system is bugged and any mods after the 50th are neither downloaded nor updated. Check if you are subscribed to more than 50 mods, and if so, unsubscribe to any you're no longer using. Unfortunate, but completely outside my control.
A) Make sure you have the most recent version of Steam (i.e. updates aren't queued. Try logging out then back in).
B) Have you enabled Cloud Sync? (Steam menu in the top-left corner, Settings, Cloud tab, check the "Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization for applications which support it".)
C) Have you enabled Sync for EU4 as well? (In Library, right-click EU4 -> Properties -> Updates -> "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for EU4".)
D) Unsubscribe and resubscribe.
E) Try starting EU4 after all this, but leaving it on the mod select screen for a minute or two, then exit and start again.
This works in 90% or so of cases, but if it is still not working it may be one of those notorious Steam permission cases, or else Steam is not providing you the full file. Try the following:
A2) I suggest checking your EU4 mod folder (C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\mod\) for Beyond Typus files. They should be named "beyondtypus.zip" and "beyondtypus.mod". If they are both present, check the size of the .zip, it should be well over 50mb.
B2) If both files are present and the size of the zip is proper, check for an outdated manual installation .mod file that may be taking precedence. Also make sure you haven't put a (presumably empty) Beyond Typus folder or archive in the main EU4 installation (C:\<Steam Installation>\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis IV\mod).
C2) If the .mod file is missing, you may create a new one manually. Copy the following into a .txt file, save, then after finishing, rename the file beyondtypus.mod (make sure the .txt is removed as well. .mod replaces .txt):
(Note "Beyond Typus 10.0" & supported versions should be adjusted to reflect current version).
C3) If the .zip file is not present, or not of the proper size, navigate to your Steam installation (most often C:\Program Files (x86)\ or C:\Program Files\) then navigate to the buffer area where Steam stores mid-progress downloaded mods. In the Steam installation folder, go to userdata\######## (a stream of numbers)\ugc\.
In this folder you will find several folders, one named download & another named referenced. check both for .zip archives (named with long strings of numbers), open them up looking for one containing beyondtypus.zip. Once you find it, manually unzip the first level archive and place the beyondtypus.zip file manually into the paradox mod folder (C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\mod\).
If all this fails, I try to post the external (non-Steam) download link through the Paradox forums as regularly as possible, link just above credits in the main description.
Answer - This is an unfortunate result of the improved graphics, more accurate and larger projection, new provinces, and new tags. To an extent, this is unavoidable, but try one of the fewer tag starts to see if that improves things.
The fewer tag starts simply remove some weaker nations and/or begin with most vassals, fiefs, and marches added by Beyond Typus annexed from the start. The dates are:
15 November 1444 (4 days after default start) - No New World Minors Start
16 November 1444 (5 days after default start) - Minimal Tag Start (best performance)
17 November 1444 (6 days after default start) - No New Old World Vassals Start
Answer - The Europa Universalis 4 engine loads mods in alphabetical order. If a modded file has already been loaded, the engine ignores any other files with the same name, or modifying the same values. What this means practically speaking, is a mod with a name beginning in "a" will take priority over a mod beginning with "b" or "c" etc., and Beyond Typus, starting with "B" will typically take priority over most other mods.
I do, however, endeavour for maximum compatibility whenever possible, so it is posible *in select cases* that the only incompatibility between Beyond Typus is the name, or else the conflicting files are of minimal consequence. Please do note, however, that I can't officially support, troubleshoot, or endorse installations where BT files are being overriden by 3rd party content, so proceed at your own risk here.
If you want to change the load order, and have the content from another mod take priority, the method is relatively simple:
A: Navigate to your mod folder (typically found in C:\Users\<USER NAME>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\mod\) and make a copy of the .mod file for the mod you want to take priority.
B: Now, rename the new .mod file to something new, I'd reccomend something beginning with "Addon" to keep it organised.
C: Next, open the new & renamed copy of the .mod file with a text editor (Notepad, Notepad ++, or similar). You will be presented with something like:
Which you want to change into this:
Specifically, you're making one change: adjusting the mod's name. This should both determine load order, as well as what name appears in the mod window in the game launcher. This is what you change to an alphabetically earlier name, I'd recommend name="Addon <<MOD NAME>>" if you only want it to take priority over BT, or name="!Addon <<MOD NAME>>" if you want it to take priority even over other BT addons (Like the Idea Variation overriding BT's Misc Addon).
Good luck!
