Unturned

Snowpine County

My take on the map.
Playing singleplayer to check out possibly hosting map, impressions as I play: (Working my way clockwise around map from spawning outside Snowpine Bay)

Hope you take the time to read through this, 'cause I'm going point by point. :)

- First thing I noticed is no cold effect. I know people dislike it, but I like it in the snow maps.

- I like Snowpine Bay's town layout, but the big building has no items in it, few Zombies also.

- Ships dont have any loot around them, therefore kinda pointless.

- Summerside is nice, but the larger buildings with no natural stairs/ladders have no loot on the upper floors, even though you can build to get up to them. Of of them doesn't have loot at all, even on ground floor.

- The un-named lumber camp is a nice little pit stop, would ike to see more places like this (see final comments). Could use a name point on map for admin purposes (teleporting and such).

- The frozen river is a nice touch.

- Pinewood prison is odd... the tower has a chainsaw and carjack in it, which is out of place loot (baton, gun, ammo, some kinda gear would be better).... also there's military zombies instead or prisoner/cop/guard zombies, which seems out of place. The path leading from the road to the prison could use some touching up to not look like it's made of a bucnh of squares. So far this area needs the most tweaking with the out of place spawns and zombies.

- The plaza is cool and has a complete feel to it. Only thoughts I has was the pizza place seems a bit empty, and maybe add a mechanic with a gas tank next to it?

- I like Frozen Falls a lot. I found one cabin that has collision issues, It's empty, but seems like there's some invisible object in the way stopping my movement near the left side windows. I was saddened that trhis was the first stop without a water source. Maybe add a well on site? Also seems to spawn only clothes and food, maybe add some camp stuff suck as Camp Axe, Binoculars, Canteen, Bedrool, etc.

- Un-named mine (top right corner) again has weird spawns, two hammers and a carjack. Also some sort of map name would be nice. This seems like an area that could be added to a bit.

At this point, I've JUST come across my first Moose. I don't know if it's dumb luck, but I haven't seen any others.

- Heli crash site could use a bio zombie or two, just for something to shoot at. Otherwise it's fine.

- Northeast un-named off limits: Again, need a map name point, also the domes seem to really like spawning baseball bats for some reason. I would consider addign a fuel tank here also.

- The airport is cool, but needs a control tower. Also I expected to find stuff like blowtorches or scrap metal in the hangers, not camp axes.

Just crossing the canyon bridge, the train hanging off it is a nice touch.

- Canyon valley: more weird spawns, like fire station spawning golf clubs and camp axes? Why not fire axes and fire clothes? Construction area spawns kitchen knife, MORE camp axes, car jack? No generators or lights, or hard hats, etc. More large empty buildings with no loot on any floors.

- Military base in canyon: Seems ok, needs map name point though. Not sure why they have a baseball diamond....

I've noticed a lot of explosives like... everywhere.

- Train depot: No gas or water, almost exclusively spawning food.

Gas station: Kinda expected more, it's big, but kinda empty, throw in some abanoned wrecked cars, and more gas station items (mostly was food and backpacks).

===================================

PRO/CONS LIST:

Pros:

- Nicely laid out map, main road in a circle make navigation easy.

- Water and gas supplies in nearly every location.

- Map has a nice overall atmopshere, with the feel of Yukon but with a larger size.

Cons:

- Major points of interest need name ids on the map. This is CRITICAL in offering better admining, as well as more of a variety for people running feasts and/or airdrops, as it goes to random locations.

- Item spawns are not consistent with the locations they are in. Example: Camp axes spawning in military base, baseball barts and hockey sticks spawning in airport hanger. This issue is MAP WIDE in virtually all locations, like you just gave up and said "screw it, spawn whatever".

- No weather system (freezing to death not possible).

- Needs more animals for hunting.

- Map seems like it's big for the sake of being big. LONG drives between places. The inner area the main road loops around feels too empty and open, and could benefit from another town in the middle of it, maybe branching off the road the gas station is on off to the northwest.

- Some buildings completely lacking any loot or even detail, just empty shells of buildings with nothign to offer game wise or visually.

====================================

My final thoughts:

Overall the map is nice, but the random item spawns absolutely kill it for me. I saw from your earlier comments that if you work on it too long you get bored and wind up not finishing things. It seems like that's what happened here.

The above issue and the non-weather system are my main two gripes. If these got fixed I would be using this map for my December map this year. Sadly, in its current state, I'll have to pass. I'll check in with it every once in a while to see if anything has changed in the notes.

I love this review, great points and gives me a lot to think about. I don't mean to be defensive but I would like to clarify some of your points.

- Lack of nodes: I decided not to add a lot of nodes to encourage realism and exploration, I wanted people to explore the areas they see on the map, though you make a good point, I will try to go back later and add more.

- Random Loot Spawns and Lack of Decorated buildings: That's just me being lazy :P I hate adding loot and getting the small details and would rather focus on the terrain and city planning. I realize this is a very important aspect to the maps and I will go back and work on this later.

- No Weather System: I only did this for the spawn town, anywhere above there is effected by "blizzard". I did not want to have new players ending up dead because they can't find clothes fast enough.

- Long Drives: I did not realize this until my playthrough of the map on some servers, I'll go back later and create random buildings to explore along the way.

- Animals for hunting: I spent about 20 minutes spaming moose nodes through the forest areas, that's just bad luck :P

I'm glad you addressed these issues and I wish people could give more reason to their thoughts on the map like you did, for this, I will go back and fix a lot of the mentioned issues, Thanks :)

I'm sorry I have not fixed these earilier, I started playing other games and grew bored of unturned for a while, I'll try to work a bit more in the future.

Overall man it's a SOLID map. I really like it, but I already know people on my server would complain about the randomized loot items. That's the BIGGEST thing. If you refine it more leave another reply here so I see the notification and I'll definitely check it out again. :)

I love this map but I second the fact that the item/zombie spawns are weird. How am I ever going to find a police uniform if none will spawn?

I'm sorry guys, I'll make sure to add this later, the spawns are really boring to me x_x but I'll make sure you guys get what you need.

Thanks.

Offtopic: I want to make a snowy map and I figure you're a good person to ask. How do I make a map in Unturned? I have almost no experience.

Also, whenever I look on Youtube, I find tutorials but on the wrong version of Unturned, so I figured I'd try asking you.

when you get into the game, go onto the workshop selection and the map creation settings should be there, once in the editor, any tutorial should be able to help you.

Actually I've been in the editor and managed to figure out how to spawn items, animals, vehicles, and objects. But there's still a lot I need to learn and I was hoping you could help. All the Youtube tutorials I find are on the wrong version of Unturned.

ah ok, it's hard to be specific so I might make a video later on my old youtube channel and upload it. I'll go over tips and tricks so you can learn to be a quick and smart editor.

Ok, thanks.
The main problem I have is with roads and how to connect them/remove them, and how to make item spawn probability. Also a way to perfectly line up ladders with other structures would be nice.
