This is what i have so far on just basic testing project. So far changing one filed in the main units to match the a new row ui unit groupings table works. Some unknown field i figured out it means what order your units will be displayed on the custom battle screen.

But for some reason i can't add the words to go along with the new icons. I wished CA made Total war more mod friendlier then it is now. In Empire you had base 0 flag, factions flag over lapped it.

I hope CA makes a reasonable faction based flag system onto unit icons blank slates. Just like how settlement capture feature works.
