The Kushan don't start with their research ship, but their mothership has the advantage of being able to build multiple units at the same time so that balances it out.
There is a bit of an issue right now where matches won't end at late game if there are no resources or KAD RU Collectors left (so you can track where they go to), as the Khar-Toba will likely have moved around at this point and can be impossible to find. Especially at later stages this can become a problem. A suggestion to make the Kad AI forfeit the match under certain conditions (only the Khar-Toba is left, no RU income for 5+ mins, 30+ mins total gameplay time have passed) has been forwarded.
Until then your best bet is to find and the destroy the Khar-Toba first, and then the Needleships.
