What's the plans for pedestrian roads?
My biggest gripe with them currently is the way they look - almost like a car park without the parked cars, just this wide expanse of concrete... Often, they don't join up with the buildings alongside them, so you get driveways of low density buildings not quite connecting to the road in some cases, and there's usually a thin border of 'ruined' ground between the road and adjacent buildings.

IMHO it would be worth giving them pavements, but leaving the main road surface using a bland concrete texture with no markings (ie. same texture that's currently used for the whole road). If this is done, it's probably worth ditching the config option to make vehicles use the middle as that would become the default and only mode.

Now that we have a lane customiser, the other options - like allowing residential vehicles and cargo - are also somewhat obsolete, although they would be useful for setting defaults maybe?

When I first saw the feature, my hope was that the road would effectively be a zoneable pedestrian walkway that also allowed limited vehicle use. The "more roads" mod apparently has something like this, although I've never tried that mod. It would be awesome to have a narrow pedestrian road for making small windy suburban streets.

Pedestrian roads have been a headache for me. I've tried several things, but never got any results I liked. I've tried your suggestion but they break connections with bridges even more than what they currently do (I'd have to use normal bridges and it's kinda horrible), I've tried different textures (including cobblestone) but the sides of the road are distorced and the texture looks horrible.

My plan is to dedicate next week to it (and some other roads) given that I can get the UI working for the customizer tool (I really want to get rid of those horrible buttons) for next week's update.

Among other things, I want to try to make one-lane one-way pedestrian roads so they can be narrower.

I'll use the "Current Developments" thread when I have something to show so I can get your feedback on it.

What's the plans for the customiser tool - I was wondering if isometric icons of the vehicle types would be of use? If so I could try using the isometric cam mod to get some PNGs for you? Would remove the need for any text, as people could just click the images of the vehicles they want to allow to toggle them on and off.

The plan is to have a panel similar to the roads panel where you'd have icons of the vehicles that you can click to toggle them. Text is only placeholder, including the RC button. I need an icon for that as well.

The panel allows for 7 icons without the need to scroll. So I'm thinking of adding the buttons as such (not necessarily in this order):

- Ambulance/Fire Truck/Police (this button has 3 options: enabled, disabled and emergency only)
- Bus
- Cargo Trucks
- Garbage Trucks
- Hearses
- Citizens

Right now I'm still fighting with the UI, though I'm finally making progress. I haven't worried about the icons themselves yet. If you have nothing better to do, taking isometric "photos" of the vehicles would be awesome. I would need them to have a one-color background (much like the green screen in movies) so that I can easily remove it later. My suggestion is to pause the game, delete the stretch of road where they are and take the photo with the grass as background.

"Citizens" might be confusing, especially if at some later date the mod ventures in to pedestrian territory?

Also, wouldn't all the buttons need 3 states? On/Off/Mixed (same sort of thing as a tri-state checkbox) - so depending what lanes I've selected, the buttons should show the current state of those lanes... for each category: do all the lanes allow it, all of them block it, or a mixture?

As for icons, I've been experimenting. The isometric camera mod helps get more reliable screenies, although I didn't think of deleting road to get an easier to work with background - will try that next attempt - although the issue there is that antialiasing will leave a green tint around the vehicle edges. Not sure if simply turning off antialiasing in game will avoid that issue, but I'll give it a try. My plan was to provide them with transparent backgrounds, I've already done a few where I've manually erased the road etc. The big problem I'm running in to is that the vehicle textures are very low resolution in game and there is a blockyness to the 3D models that you don't really notice until you look at a static image in detail....

I'm wondering if it would be worth asking the community to see if there are any isometric artists out there, and then providing them with screenies of the vehicles and seeing if they can create complete new icons from scatch based on those, that would certainly give a much cleaner looking icon.

scratch that, I just found a massive creative commons licensed set of isometric vehicle icons :)

EDIT: aaand scratch that too, turned out to be just a few free samples for a very expenisive commercial set. urg.

Remember that the buttons won't have text. The "citizens" button will have a normal car. If the mod goes into pedestrian territory, the button will have a person. It's clearly distinguishable.

I think the mixed state can be ignored. When you're selecting multiple roads for editing, you have a set of restrictions in mind that you want to apply to them. It doesn't really matter what restrictions they had before.
And this will be reinforced when I find a good way of showing lane restrictions at all times.

Ideally, I'd want vehicles from the game as icons but other icons will do in the meantime. When you have an icon ready, let me see it :)

PS: We're getting a bit off-topic here....

It doesn't really matter what previous state is when I'm setting a new state... However, if I want to check what state lanes are currently in before deciding whether to edit them, how do I work out what vehicles are allowed? Scenario: I'm routing an intersection in an area with customised roads, how do I know traffic from lane A is allowed on lane B?

For $30 I can buy a set of great looking images that are visually similar to the C:S designs, royalty free, and the icon problem is dealt with instantly. Or I can donate $30 to your paypal. Which would you prefer?

EDIT: I'll upload samples to a github ticket.

As I said, I will add a way of showing lane restrictions in the lanes themselves (without the need to select them). I'm still not sure how but I'll ask for help when I get to it. That will solve your scenario, right?

I really appreciate that you wouldn't mind to spend money to improve this mod but let's hold off for the moment and see what we can do ourselves. That's what's fun about doing mods. :)
In the end, if we realize we would be better off with those icons, we'll split the bill.

Let's continue this discussion in the github ticket to avoid derailing this thread even more.

* "The "more roads" mod apparently has something like this, although I've never tried that mod."
Please, try it as soon as possible. You will have new ideas to improve you mod.

I'd love my suburbs to look like this:

Here's a great use for the current design of pedestrian roads - as service roads at an airport:
