General Failure at start-up? Here's the fix!
Copy of the post made by [Phoenix]Teal'c from Phoenix Interactive, found here: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/565216687/492379439679351160/#c492379439683535026

This should fix any crash to desktop that happens.

This error is typically generated by steam. (or GBX Tools ...) When create .big, the tool corrupts this file during downloading ... we can't resolve it, actually the only solution is to redownload this. But before this, don't forget the delete of mod in HWRM folder is NOT sufficient.

Step 1 : Stop subscribing to mod ;
Step 2 : Stop steam process, close steam, same.
Step 3 : Go into your Steam Folder, (Same of HW, not the steam main folder if steam is not installed at the exact location of HWRM). : ...\Steam[Library]\SteamApps\workshop\content\XXXX\403171608[XXXX is number, but random, and contains the next folder, number of this mods is general and not random]
Step 4 : Delete 403171608 folders (contain save of mods if you delete in the HWRM folder, steam automatically takes these files.)
Step 5 : Go to /Homeworld/HomeworldRM/DATAWORKSHOPMODS/76XXXXXXXX/403171608
Delete this 403171608 folder. [76XXXXXXXX is your number of steam user or HWRM profile. Contains all mods of HWRM that you subscribe in Workshop for RM].
Step 6 : Subscribe to this mod. And re-download all of file.

Step 7 : If you are lucky, the error with : last token read: ' ' at line 1 in string ""
Don't appeared at the same location, or don't appear at all.

Optional Step 8 (by Rufus): sacrifice a goat over your computer. Cleaning the mess should keep you busy long enough for me to write a new update and cause another DL that will probably fix the mod.

If it doesn't fix it, notify me and I'll see what I can do to help you.

Reposting here--sorry for putting it in the general discussion comments first by accident. I've played the mod before, but tonight when I tried I got a General Failure (o7). Fine, no worries. I checked your workshop updates and followed the directions in this post. Still getting a "General Failure" (o7) message. Any tips?

OK, as discussed, these were issues due to loading a save done on a previous version of the mod, after an update.

I deleted the posts because they were from the older version of the mod, should have seen that:)

No problem. ^_^;

Alright so talking with Rufus and trying quite a few things we came up with the solution.. the bigfile on steam seems fully usable.. the problem seems to lie in the launcher.. so to run the game perfectly you have to first go to your steam directory and find

****EDIT**** MAJOR correction ****

So after some trial and error i found out when the problem occurs.. it appears that when steam/homeworld copies the .big file from the workshop folder into the dataworshopmods folder that for some reason the .big file is corrupted.. so its a VERY simple fix instead of what i wrote earlier..

Go to

steamapps/workshop/content/******/403171608 (****** is the workshop given number of hwrm)

find -mod WC4FC_Remastered.big and copy it to

steamapps/common/homeworld/homeworldrm/DataWorkshopMods/76561197995830187/403171608

Overwriting the .big inthere.. then you should be good to go :) though following any updates these steps might be required again

Hope this helps :)

Man this is much easier than what I had in mind XD. If this doesn't work it still looks like the delete both folders where the mod is located and redownloading would be a fallback. Do you know if Steam checks the .big file that is copied to the DataWorkshopMods folder after mod installation for errors during a "verify game cache integrity" check? I wonder if the Steam test would even pick up on that.

I tried the delete both folders and redownload several times.. always general crash.. it seems to be when it copies from workshop to dataworkshopmods that the error happens.. and no idea.. im not a modder :) never worked with steamworkshop..

me and Rufus were messing about.. he put the big file up on moddb so i tried a few things back and forth.. realizing finally that it was only the dataworkshopmods big file thats corrupted.. so no need to download it from moddb when i could just sub it on workshop and manually copy the uncorrupted file over from the workshop folder :)

To think of all the time I have spent going through deleting folders and doing clean installs of Steam and then the game and finally the mod just to have it not work. I will remember this for many moons to come :steamfacepalm:

heh yeah it surprised me aswell.. dont quite understand what can be corrupting the bin file by copying it between folders.. but somehow it happens.. and when the mod is updated you just copy it from the workshop folder again and it works fine :)

I've tried your fix and I still get a general error. I also did Rufus's fix with the same result.

try uninstalling the mod entirely.. and delete both folders in my post.. then reinstall it and manually do the same copy i describe in my post

Huh. When does the crash happens? Also, can you add the command -luatrace in the small window at the bottom of the mod selection screen, then, after the crash, go to the following folder: ...\steamapps\common\Homeworld\HomeworldRM\Bin\Release\ and give me the last dozen lines from the text file called HWRM.log? It will help me see what went wrong.

Thanks!

I followed the instructions and I still get an error.

I got the log and uploaded it to Google Drive. Here's the link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6YjX4BmdpdFMlUyWkRaVmFQdzQ
Hope it helps.
Something worth noting. I've been unable to launch my mods from the launcher for some reason. as a result, I've been using this guide to do so. It has also worked on some remastered mods as well.
