Introducing the Dogs of War
When we started on this project we wanted to enable new tactics for the engineer without sacrificing important game balance. Engineers (especially ones that stay on pure defense) tend to have a lot of one on one battles usually from other characters that are well prepared and practiced for that battle. Once dispatched, their equipment quickly gets taken out. We started discussing ways that engineers could be more effective in that scenario while at the same time becoming more exposed if a group of characters decided to attack.

Our concept then became disguising a weapon to look like a sentry gun, but not function like one. We decided that transforming a fake sentry gun into something that would attack single enemies would be a good way of achieving this goal while preserving the balance. So, we took away the ranged capability of the sentry gun and replaced it with a point blank attack.

Big Lug was the first concept we worked on - taking the sentry gun apart into all of its pieces then reassembling it into something that resembled an animal. Once we'd worked out the major pieces we jumped into a concept / demo cycle. After a few iterations we ended up with the model you see in our presentation.

We decided to have some fun with the Mini Sentry replacement and created a character that we named "El Jefe" using the same process which we'd envisioned to be just a little bit... off. It shakes, it quivers and morphs like it needs an exorcism. We spent quite a bit of time coming up with Texanese type expressions to describe El Jefe, finally settling on:
"He's meaner than a canned weasel!"

The project was a blast to work on and we're already working on new items to add to the workshop queue. We're looking forward to having discussions with you about our ideas!

Hope you enjoyed the show!

This thing's worst enemy could as well be a Scout. He can stay out of the dog's range by running and can destroy it with his weapons.

nutz55 - that's a good idea for a weakness balance. Especially with the scouts baseball.. you know how dogs always get distracted by those things... :D

the eyes should be the laser pointers and wrangler allows you to be the dog but makes you in a afk state
Scout=dead dog
Demoknight=Dead demo

Thanks. Let's also have 50% damage resistance to Stickybombs.

must get this into tf2

If the tf2 team could figure out how to get this working like the HHH, just chasing down the nearest enemy at medic speed or something, this would be really cool. I think it would be really cool if it worked with the wangler, too.

Suggested Stats: As previously stated, 50% stickybomb damage resistance, because 1. to stop spammers and 2. to make it less vulnerable to Sticky traps.

Big Lugs should have about 50 more health than a regular lvl 3 sentry, up to 350, and a movement speed of 125%: faster than all classes other than Scout. Bite damage is 100 per bite, way more than most melee attacks. (should have melee only). This would rip apart most slow classes, but the Natascha's bullets will slow it down to 90% of normal speed, slower than a Demoman. (There's another weakness right there.)

El Jefe would have approximately 175 health. They move at a speed of 140%, enough to outrun Scouts. Bites deal 80 damage. It sounds OP, so to compensate, for every 15 seconds on the move, it will stop for 5 seconds, smoking and shaking, and making squeaky noises. Then it will pick a new target and pursue it. The pause will give the enemy a chance to destroy it.

Both dogs can be distracted and even lured off death cliffs by thrown objects (Sandman balls, Jarate, Sandviches, etc). Jarate and, as previously stated, Natascha bullets will slow them to 90% of normal move speed. Courageous Spies can plant Sappers on dogs to disable them, but the dog will shake it off after it does 50 damage.
