I have no idea, I'm doing enlistment stuff for the first time and finding problems with it too. Try finding the lord and reenlisting with that lord?

My problem is that I can't figure out how to upgrade myself as a troop. I have enough XP for it, but it won't let me, only the archer, and that's not what I'm going for

Wait outside the settlement in a camp for them to leave or inside the settlement I only wait outside because I have less distance to catch up to them when they leave. They are either putting troops into the garrison or taking them outside. I am assuming you are only getting this greyed out part when they are in a settlement?
